Cadillac has officially confirmed that its F1 test driver Colton Herta will join Hitech for the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship season. The move marks a significant shift in Herta’s career as he switches from an accomplished seven-year IndyCar career to compete in the premier F1 feeder series.

At just 25, Herta brings a wealth of experience including nine IndyCar wins, 16 poles, and a runner-up finish in the 2024 championship. His entry into F2 is designed to help him gain the necessary FIA Super Licence points to qualify for a future F1 race seat, while also allowing him to adapt to racing machinery and track conditions aligned with the F1 calendar.

Herta expressed excitement about the challenge ahead: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Hitech for the 2026 FIA Formula 2 season. This is a big shift in my career, and I’m ready for the challenge… The opportunity to race on the F1 calendar against the best young drivers was one I couldn’t pass up.”

Hitech’s team manager Clive Hatton praised Herta’s talent and professionalism, calling this step a crucial progression to elite-level racing. Cadillac’s CEO Dan Towriss acknowledged it as a “huge risk” for the American driver but essential for his development towards Formula 1.

Alongside his racing commitments, Herta will continue to support Cadillac’s Formula 1 program through testing and simulator duties. The switch to F2 is a calculated gamble in pursuit of the ultimate prize a place on the F1 grid.
