Six-wheeled trucks are common, but a six-wheeled Formula One race car? Not so much. During the 1976 season, the Tyrrell P34 competed in Formula One with a pair of conventional tires at the rear and four tiny Goodyears up front. It took the win at the Swedish Grand Prix with Jody Scheckter behind the wheel.
Despite its initial success, the design had too many technical hurdles to overcome, including braking and tire wear issues with the four small tires up front. In the end, Formula One’s governing body decreed that a race car should have four – and only four – wheels.
