1949 Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta €4,000,000 - €5,000,000 EUR

The Ferrari 166 MM is a legendary sports racing car named after Clemente Biondetti’s triumph at the 1948 Mille Miglia. Its impressive record of achievements includes overall victory in the Mille Miglia and 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949, as well as winning the Mille Miglia in 1950. Among the 25 examples of the 166 MM produced, chassis number 0024 M is the 10th and was originally built with the desirable barchetta coachwork by Touring.

Ordered by the Automóvil Club Argentina, the Ferrari was painted in the Argentine national colours of Avorio and Blue and made its debut at the 1949 Paris Motor Show. Privateer Carlos Menditeguy drove it to its first sports car victory in South America at Mar del Plata in January 1950. After its return to the factory, chassis 0024 M was sold to Luigi Francesco Zaccaria Terravazzi and then campaigned by Aprile Palmer in several races.

The Ferrari was then owned by three more Italian collectors before receiving new aluminium berlinetta coachwork by Vignale in 1954. In 1956, the car was sold to Theodore Pala in Los Angeles who, like many Ferrari race cars of the period, replaced the original drivetrain with a Chevrolet V-8 to keep it roadworthy. The car was later restored by Neil Twyman and Jim Stokes, with a new barchetta body handcrafted by Bob Ford in the original Touring style.

The 166 MM was acquired by several collectors before returning to American ownership in 2008 and being sold to its current owner in 2011. This rare opportunity to own a sought-after Touring Barchetta, with a one-off original colour scheme, is highly valued in the contemporary market. It is a masterpiece of Ferrari’s foundational engineering and has proven to be easy to drive on rallies while stunning to view on the world’s greatest Concours d’Elegance stages. Chassis 0024 M would make an excellent addition to any serious Ferrari collection.
