Drivers who usually visit supermarket petrol stations to fill up their tank have been warned about Christmas Day closures on Thursday. Christmas is a busy time for drivers, with many of us making journeys to see families, drop off presents and drive home for Christmas.
But drivers are being warned to plan ahead this week as many of the cheapest supermarket petrol stations will be closed on Christmas Day. Both Tesco and Asda are two of the cheapest petrol station chains in the UK, according to the RAC. Asda has more than 500 petrol stations across the UK, with the cheapest currently 125.7p per litre of petrol, and the average 131.7p, both cheaper than the UK average of 135.55p.
Meanwhile Tesco’s cheapest is even lower at 124.9p, and the average is 132.2p.
But drivers hoping to grab some bargain fuel for Christmas are being urged to check the opening times of their local petrol stations carefully because some supermarket filling stations will be shut on Christmas Day.
According to The Grocer, all Tesco petrol stations will be closed on Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25.
Sainsbury’s petrol stations are closed on Christmas Day entirely too.
Asda will have petrol stations open on Christmas Day, but only for pay-at-the-pump. You won’t be able to use cash to fill up on Christmas Day.
Most Morrisons petrol stations will also be closed on Christmas Day, but some will be open and drivers should use the Morrisons Store Finder or app to check.
The RAC says drivers should plan ahead and check their local petrol stations. Though supermarkets are usually the cheapest, sometimes independent garages can beat them.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Our analysis shows that while it’s cheaper on average to fill up at supermarkets, it’s also worth seeking out low-priced independent forecourts that can offer great value petrol and diesel. The best advice is to keep a close eye out for low prices on your normal routes, or better still, use the myRAC app to search for the best prices in your area.”
