► New Mazda supermini concept revealed
► Vision X-Compact previews future 2 hatch
► It’s designed to be ‘much like a friend’

Prettiest car at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show? This Mazda Vision X-Compact concept car surely has a podium position at the very least.

The new concept car, which has been unveiled alongside the Vision X-Coupe, is certainly a glamorous yet oh-so-clean bit of design – something Mazda has always been known for. Given its shape and silhouette, this likely previews a future Mazda 2 supermini.

As well as very clean surfacing, a bold red colour and some cute but purposeful design cues outside, the interior is meant to be as clean and simple. Like the bigger concept, there are proper dials for instruments that look hewn out of solid metal, and there’s a fixed spot for your phone.

This is, however, peak 2025 concept car. Mazda throws an endless barrage of buzzwords in the press bumph about this thing, saying it is designed to ‘deepen the bond between people through the fusion of a human sensory digital model and empathetic AI.’ Whatever that nonsense means.

There is a little bit of clarity, though, that adds weight to our suspicion that this is a thinly-veiled look at the next 2 supermini: ‘this represents Mazda’s vision for the future of smart mobility.’ And then it goes all corny again by saying the concept is for a world ‘where vehicles and people form an emotional connection, much like a friend.’

Aside from all the Black Mirror and Christine vibes we’re getting from the press release, in short – we like this. Get building, Mazda – your current 2 supermini is so old now it likely qualifies for a pension.
