UK drivers are being warned as an item inside their vehicles is often filthier than a toilet seat.

Katie Newman, Car Care Expert from Carfume, is alerting Brits about common cleaning errors when it comes to vehicles, and why these mistakes mean our cars are full of bacteria.

The average car steering wheel can harbour more germs than a public toilet seat, with some research revealing hundreds of different types of bacteria, including E. coli and Staphylococcus.

It's advisable to keep a small bottle of hand sanitiser in your car door or glove compartment and use a bit every time you get back into the car, ensuring any external germs are eliminated before touching the wheel again.

To clean the steering wheel, a simple microfibre cloth and cleaning spray will do the trick. For tougher stains, try a degreaser and a toothbrush.

Cup holders are also prime locations for accumulating dust, dirt and potential mould from spilled beverages. This, coupled with the deep recesses, creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

And it's quite a tricky spot to thoroughly clean.

Firstly, remove loose debris, then wipe with a damp cloth and mild cleaner, using a toothbrush for any more stubborn spots. For very sticky residue, presoak with warm soapy water, leave for a few minutes then wipe and repeat if necessary.
