► BYD to show new EV

Not content with flooding the UK market with mostly affordable EVs and hybrids, BYD now has plans to crack the Japanese market. And what better to do that than an electric Kei car?
BYD says a new Light EV will be unveiled at the 2025 Japanese Mobility Show and will spearhead an impressive array of new products – most of which are commercial vehicles, to be fair.
It seems the tiny electric city car is very much back on the menu, and BYD is naturally keen to capitalise.
Details are thin on the ground, but BYD has at least provided us with a teaser of its forthcoming ‘Light EV’. The official picture shown above is extremely boxy – as it prioritises passenger space over dynamics – but it still has the suggestion of a bonnet out front, too.
BYD says the car will comply with ‘Japan’s unique light standard’ and will feature some of the brand’s signature technology. With that in mind expect BYD’s Light EV to use the same blade battery technology as the rest of its range.
BYD also plans to show a range of commercial vehicles at the upcoming Mobility Show, including several buses – such as the J6, which also acts as a mobile office. And if that’s not appetising enough, BYD says its electric Yangwang U9 supercar will also ‘dance on stage’ three times a day. Amazing.
‘The entire booth is excited by dance time,’ says the press release, translated to English. ‘Please experience the powerful performance that is integrated with the music.’
