Back in April, Austin Hill drove to the win at Talladega Superspeedway. After the race, X user @TheDrChimp posted, “Wish I took a pic of Austin Hill flipping us off back being pushed to victory lane.”
On Sunday, Austin Hill returned to victory lane with the NASCAR Xfinity Series win at the same track. That same fan was in the stands yet again and he gave the same one finger salute to Hill on the frontstretch as the driver celebrated.
Austin Hill responded with a finger of his own, aimed at the fan. But, this time, the fan snapped a picture (seen below) and it went viral.
Dr. Chimp added, “To clarify some context to the picture:”
“Yes he flipped us off.”
“Yes we did it first.”
“Yes we thought it was hilarious.”
“No he shouldn’t be punished.”
The x user added, “I respect the gesture and it adds to the needed personality the field needs I may hate him, but I love to hate him cuz that’s sports.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr stated that he liked that response.
“No! I’ve never done that in my life. He’ll never make it! The fan’s always right. He should be fined for that,” Jimmy Spencer appeared to perhaps joke via the Door Bumper Clear podcast. But he also added, “What he did at Indianapolis, that’s just plain dirty.”
“Actually, I loved it,” Austin Hill told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio of taking on the villain role.
“I was just having fun, having a good time with the fans. We were actually laughing back-and-forth about it. It was just a fun time.”
“Nothing malicious. Nothing negative or anything like that, just screwing around. When you win races and you’re able to mess around with the fans and have some fun with them and their having some fun with you, it’s just a fun time.”
“That’s why I love racing. That’s why I love to win races is to mess around with the fans. Give it back to them when they give it to me.”
“For me, I just enjoy it. A lot of people in the racing community, they don’t like having that role and feeling like people dislike them. But for me, and the way that I am, it doesn’t bother me.”
“Some people that maybe dislike me, they just dislike me because of things on the racetrack. They don’t really know me personally. And, if they sat down to have a beer with me, they might think a little different of me.”
“I have this kind of switch that I flip, when it comes to being on the race track versus being off the race track. It’s working for me right now.”
