BMW announced its arrival in the electric supercar market with the 2015 i8 coupe. It featured a wildly complex hybrid powertrain with an electric motor up front and rear wheels powered by a gasoline engine with only 3 cylinders! Total system output was 362 horsepower, and the i8 could travel 15 miles on electricity alone.
The performance is packaged into a sleek sports car shape that’s constructed with extensive use of carbon fiber. Its signature butterfly doors swing upward to reveal an interior that’s part BMW luxury car and part Starship Enterprise.
For 2019, the i8 has been updated with a refreshed look, more power, and increased electric-only range. For the first time, BMW will offer a roadster version of the i8. It will have the highest base price of any BMW ever sold in America.
