In the late 1960s, militaries around Europe were looking for a Jeep-like utility vehicle. Volkswagen answered the call with the Type 181, also known as the Kubelwagen. It was produced from 1969 to 1980. It came to America for the 1973 and 1974 models years as the Volkswagen Thing.

The Thing was a bare-bones rear-wheel-drive convertible with excellent ground clearance, an automatically locking rear differential, and not much else. Other than seat belts, safety features were non-existent. It was powered by a four-cylinder engine that produced just 55 horsepower. Colour choices included Pumpkin Orange, Sunshine Yellow, and Blizzard White.
