Jeep Does It Again With In-Car Pop-Up Ads

  • Jeep is continuing to bombard customers with annoying ads.
  • The latest pop-up tried to get an owner to buy a new Jeep.
  • It told the customer to call a 1-800 number to opt out.

Imagine starting up your vehicle and instantly being greeted not not by your infotainment screen’s usual startup logo, but by an advertisement. While that sounds like something from a dystopian future, it’s already happening thanks to Jeep.

According to a Redditor, their 2022 Grand Cherokee tried to sell them another vehicle. In this case, the “marketing notification” informed them of a $1,500 loyalty bonus cash offer on the purchase of a new Jeep.

That’s an annoying way to start your day, but the pop-up did provide a phone number to call to opt out. Unfortunately, it’s just the generic Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat Connect number designed for “general inquiries about brand Connect packages, pricing, and more.”

Needless to say, serving up ads to customers in their existing vehicle isn’t a great way to get them to buy a new one. However, Jeep doesn’t seem to care about annoying customers as we’ve already covered similar pop-up ads promoting extended warranties.

When we asked about the previous ad, a spokesperson told us “A temporary software glitch affected the ability to instantly opt out in a few isolated cases, though instant opt-out is the standard for all our in-vehicle messages.”

That’s interesting to note as the latest ad directed the customer to call a 1-800 number, which is anything but instant. As for what customers can do, there’s not much other than to complain, opt out, and spend their money elsewhere.

Ads Are Showing Up Everywhere

Unfortunately, this isn’t even the most egregious example of invasive ads as Samsung recently began showing marketing messages on their expensive lineup of Family Hub refrigerators.

These feature an external 21.5- or 32-inch display, which the company decided was perfect for showing ads. While these were initially pitched as small spots, a Redditor quickly posted a full-screen ad for an Apple TV show. Thankfully, owners can easily turn these off by going to Settings, tapping Advertisements, and then hitting Cover Screen Ads.
