What you need to know about Blue Badge parking permits

  • Blue Badges are issued to people to help them get closer to their destination - whether for appointments such as with the GP or just for social events. However there are strict rules over who is eligible for the disabled parking permits
  • Currently there are more than 2.5 million people with a blue badge. They are given to people with a range of mobility issues with some people automatically qualifying, such as people who are severely sight impared or if they are on specific benefits.
  • Other people might qualify depending on their level of mobility.
  • A Blue Badge costs up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland. It is free in Wales. Local authorities process applications to decide whether to approve them and also set the price.
  • A Blue Badge lasts three years. People who have a blue badge do not automatically get a new one at the end of that time but must reapply. There has been a warning issued to allow plenty of time for that to be processed as it currently takes around three months.
  • Having a Blue Badge has strict rules that must be followed by the holder. Failure to do so, such as allowing someone else to use your badge, can result in a £1,000 fine and even a criminal record.
