There are strict rules over who can qualify for a blue badge, when it can be used and if you get to park for free, this is what you need to know
What you need to know about Blue Badge parking permits
- Blue Badges are issued to people to help them get closer to their destination - whether for appointments such as with the GP or just for social events. However there are strict rules over who is eligible for the disabled parking permits
- Currently there are more than 2.5 million people with a blue badge. They are given to people with a range of mobility issues with some people automatically qualifying, such as people who are severely sight impared or if they are on specific benefits.
- Other people might qualify depending on their level of mobility.
- A Blue Badge costs up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland. It is free in Wales. Local authorities process applications to decide whether to approve them and also set the price.
- A Blue Badge lasts three years. People who have a blue badge do not automatically get a new one at the end of that time but must reapply. There has been a warning issued to allow plenty of time for that to be processed as it currently takes around three months.
- Having a Blue Badge has strict rules that must be followed by the holder. Failure to do so, such as allowing someone else to use your badge, can result in a £1,000 fine and even a criminal record.
