Drivers in the UK could save more than £10 a journey by selecting a certain option on their phone. Enabling this setting on Google Maps could help you avoid unwanted fees.
Many of us rely on some form of online map or sat nav now when going on long journeys or driving somewhere new. Not only is this technology helpful for ensuring you don’t get lost, it could also help you skip toll roads and bridges. These are crossings that require money for using. In the UK there are around 20 toll roads and bridges.
The cost for these varies, with the M6 toll being one of the most expensive. For a standard car travelling along all three sections of the road the cost, at the time of reporting, is £10.50.
This is more expensive for vans and cheaper for motorbikes. To make sure you avoid charges such as this, you can select to “avoid toll roads” on your navigation system. For lots of people this will mean updating settings on Google Maps on their phone.
To turn off toll roads in Google Maps, you need to tap the three dots in the top-right corner after getting directions, select "route options," and then toggle on "avoid tolls".
You can also set this as a permanent preference by going to settings, selecting navigation settings, and toggling on "avoid tolls" under "route options".
