  • The crossover adopts a Neue Klasse design and interior.
  • Model could get a new name and performance boost.

Spy photographers have snapped the facelifted BMW X1 on multiple occasions, but now they’ve caught what appears to be the M Performance variant. It’s currently known as the X1 M35i, but rumors have suggested the updated model will adopt the M40i moniker.

Regardless of what it’s called, the crossover is entering the Neue Klasse era and adopts an all-new front end that closely echoes the iX3. As you can see, the model features a vertical twin kidney grille that is flanked by new headlights.

They’re joined by a revised hood and a new front bumper. The latter features a wide lower intake with a prominent central support as well as vertical air curtains at the outside edges.

The profile largely carries over and sports familiar 19-inch 871M wheels that are backed up by a beefy braking system with blue calipers. However, there could be additional changes by the time the model enters production.

The rear end also gives off a sense of déjà vu, but we can see updated taillights and a toned down rear bumper. They’re joined by the same spoiler and four-tailpipe exhaust system as found on today’s model.

Spy photographers didn’t get a look inside, but previous pictures have shown the crossover will adopt  Panoramic iDrive. As a result, there will be a pillar-to-pillar display at the base of the windscreen as well as a new infotainment system running Operating System X.

The changes won’t stop there as the X1 will have an all-new dashboard and a revised center console. We can also expect a new steering wheel as well as some smaller updates.

The current X1 M35i features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 312 hp (233 kW / 316 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system. This enables the crossover to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).
