In 2013, Volkswagen announced plans to market the XL1, an ultra-efficient turbo-diesel hybrid, in Europe. The two-seater was capable of going 261 miles on a gallon of fuel, according to Volkswagen. That makes it about five times as efficient as a Toyota Prius.

Its plug-in hybrid propulsion system used a 47-horsepower two-cylinder turbodiesel and a 27-horsepower electric motor. It could travel at 62 mph using just 8.3 horsepower. It had a top speed of 99 mph.

Volkswagen’s original plans included selling 250 copies of the car, but it’s unclear how many made it to the road before the diesel emissions scandal rocked the company.
