The 1987 GM Sunraycer was built to race across the middle of Australia using only the power of the sun. Using an array of 7,200 solar cells to capture energy and propel the car at up to 60 mph, the Sunraycer won the 1,950-mile race by more than two days.

It went on to set several solar-powered speed records at GM’s proving grounds in Arizona. The car is now on display in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History.
