BILLIONAIRE BUGATTI EXPERIENCE! New W16 Mistral Test Drive

The W16 Mistral is named after the powerful wind that sweeps down the Rhone, befitting a convertible that slices through the air at extraordinary speed. Only 99 were built, all sold out before launch, with about half destined for the US. Notably, the Mistral sets itself apart as the fastest open-top production car in the world, with Andy Wallace (Le Mans winner and top-speed legend) achieving 453.91 km/h (282.09 mph) in the car. Despite its roofless design, extensive engineering means there’s minimal buffeting—even at record velocity.

The Mistral’s 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 produces 1,600hp and 1,600Nm, delivered with signature Bugatti smoothness but a fresh soundtrack thanks to new induction intakes just above the driver’s head. The exposed royal blue carbon fiber bodywork paired with copper accents and a bespoke navy blue and tan leather interior further signal its unique status as a collector’s item.

During the drive, Andy Wallace explains the meticulous development that allows the Mistral’s convertible design to maintain remarkable stability and comfort at any speed. Aerodynamic aids like a Gurney flap and careful airflow smoothing mean the cabin remains calm with the roof off, and the car stays planted even as it approaches supercar-shattering speeds.

On the road, the Mistral exudes both elegance and ferocity. Initial acceleration is brutal, yet refined, with the car staying eerily composed. The induction noise from the W16 just behind the occupants’ heads adds to the sense of drama without overwhelming comfort or luxury. Simple daily usability masks the underlying engineering powerhouse: even mild throttle inputs unleash tremendous power, but the car’s tuned aerodynamics and chassis ensure a sense of safety and control rare in cars of such wild capability.

The video captures the magnitude of saying goodbye to an era—this is the final Bugatti to carry the all-conquering W16 engine before the brand moves toward an electrified future with the V16-powered Tourbillon.
