Anybody that steps into a rally car is something of a hero. Anybody that steps into a rally car to put food on their family’s table, even more so.
When professional, a driver’s greatness is usually defined by the numbers of fastest times they set, rallies they conquer or championships they win.
But in the case of Colin McRae, somehow that just doesn’t matter.
Yes, his 1995 World Rally Championship title – which he secured 30 years ago to this very day – marked him out, and his 25 rally wins were super important. But Colin was a hero not because of what he achieved, but how he achieved it.
As his wife, Alison McRae, smiled: “Everybody says there’ll never be another driver like Colin.”
In this emotive film, narrated by David Evans, we explore what made Colin such a legend on the stages, but more importantly why he was thought of so fondly away from them.
“We were going to buy an island at one point off the west coast of Scotland, put two houses on it and a motocross track in the middle,” remembers three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti.
“We were going to learn to fly aeroplanes. Honestly the utter madness of it was… god, what a privilege it was to be his pal.”
With the help of his family, friends, rivals and colleagues, we bring his character to life and share stories that have stood the test of time.
