A Refreshing Approach: No Retro Revival for the Volkswagen Beetle
A Refreshing Approach: No Retro Revival for the Volkswagen Beetle
An electric new-age Beetle wouldn't fit the mould of the original, so it's reassuring that a retro revival is off the cards

As a passionate classic Volkswagen Beetle enthusiast and owner, I'm relieved to hear that the iconic Beetle won't be making a retro comeback in the electric era. While I appreciate the Volkswagen ID Buzz and its blend of modern EV design with nods to its 1950s predecessor, I believe it's a positive move that Volkswagen is exploring other avenues instead of relying solely on retro revivals.

This decision spares Volkswagen from the social media backlash that often accompanies attempts to recreate beloved '60s or '70s icons. Keyboard warriors are quick to point out the differences, lamenting that the new versions are nothing like the originals. The recent announcement of Ford's plan to resurrect the Capri as an electric five-door crossover based on a Volkswagen Group architecture serves as a prime example, receiving a lukewarm reception at best.

Moreover, it's a relief because capturing the essence of the original Beetle would be an immense challenge in the modern era. Volkswagen already attempted this with the Golf-based Beetles launched after the original's discontinuation, but they were met with mixed reviews. While the MEB platform could offer a more authentic foundation for a new-age Beetle with rear-wheel drive, a flat floor, and a front boot, it's challenging to recreate the no-frills, durable, and charming nature of the original in today's context.

Take a look at the Fiat 500 and Mini Electric as examples. These luxury products loosely reference their 1950s predecessors, which were once direct competitors to the Beetle. While the modern iterations are well-engineered and visually appealing, their departure from the utilitarian principles that defined the original models has garnered praise. They have successfully embraced a new identity without being shackled to the past.

Volkswagen is indeed working on an affordable and cheerful family city car for the electric era, but it will serve as a contemporarily styled replacement for the Polo rather than a retro-inspired Beetle-like vehicle. This is great news for those who prioritize substance over style. It allows Volkswagen to preserve the rich and vibrant history of the Beetle as a significant chapter in the company's journey, while boldly pursuing its electric future.
