The question of which service station reigns supreme has long been a bone of contention among drivers — but fresh research has finally delivered the definitive answer.
Service stations are a hot topic amongst motorists, with travellers often fiercely loyal to their preferred pit stops. Now, research from Select Car Leasing has put the debate to rest, uncovering the top three things Brits demand when pulling into a services.
Across the entire UK, only six locations can boast all three essentials, making them the ultimate destination to grab a bite, freshen up and top up the tank.
It'll come as little shock that the three must-haves Brits seek out on the motorway or A-road are all food-related. The priorities centre around fast-food giants and one beloved supermarket chain, renowned for its top-notch snacks.
According to the research, a McDonald's is non-negotiable for 33% of Brits, securing its place as the number one service station requirement. Greggs comes in a close second at 29%, with M&S Food hot on its heels at 26% — completing what could only be described as the service station holy trinity.
Just six service stations qualify as 'ultimate' stops, boasting all three of these food essentials. The list includes:
- Baldock (Hertfordshire, A1(M))
- Beaconsfield (M40)
- Cobham (Surrey, M25)
- Leeds Skelton Lake (M1)
- Lymm (Cheshire, M6/M56)
- Stafford (M6)
Other food outlets that scored highly with Brits included Costa at 25%, KFC at 18% and Burger King at 16%. Meanwhile, 14% of respondents also admitted to keeping an eye out for a Starbucks when pulling into services.
These most sought-after stations also boast excellent facilities, with every location on the list featuring showers, charging points and children's play areas. Such amenities remain crucial for any journey, as travellers stop for far more than just quality food.
Their research revealed a car wash topped the list of priorities beyond food preferences, at 14%, followed by some form of outdoor seating for those craving fresh air. Furthermore, 13% of Britons are choosing services which include a dog-walking area.
Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, Graham Conway, suggests these findings could finally settle the 'car-guments' surrounding service station choices.
He discussed how selecting the wrong stop during a journey can risk annoying fellow passengers, and these six should satisfy everyone in the vehicle.
Getting the choice right could set the tone for a brilliant trip ahead or provide much-needed relief after what might have been a challenging journey home.
Conway said: "It's surprising to see just a handful of service stations in the UK that are able to tick off all of the most desirable features, but, handily, they're located up the spine of England for easy road trip access.
"And with many service stations now offering dedicated dog walking areas, your four-legged friend should be well catered for, too."
