Italian legend Sandro Munari has passed away aged 85 following a battle with illness.

Nicknamed “the dragon of Cavarzere,” Munari was recognized as one of the greatest drivers of his nation and generation, winning the 1977 Cup for Rally Drivers – the precursor to the World Rally Championship drivers’ title – as well as two Italian titles and the 1973 European crown.

Beginning his rallying career in 1965, Munari was a Lancia icon in both the Fulvia and Stratos HF, becoming the first driver to win a WRC round for the marque at the 1974 Sanremo Rally.

Throughout his career Munari would win seven WRC events (including three consecutive Monte Carlo Rallies in 1975-77) as he played an instrumental role in Lancia lifting its first three manufacturers’ titles (1974-76).

He was also adept on the racetrack, winning the famed Targo Florio road race in a Ferrari 312PB, and involved in Lamborghini’s short-lived rally-raid project with the LM002.

DirtFish sends its condolences to Sandro’s many friends and family, and to the entire Italian motorsport community.
