January is a time when many drivers wake up to condensation in their cars, with people often looking for techniques to banish it quickly. However, if your car is often fogged up, and you don't know what to do about it, it turns out there's a simple method you can use which may be able to prevent it from happening in the first place.

According to the RAC (Royal Automobile Club), applying a simple item to your car windscreen can help, and what it is will probably surprise you. The hack can lead to preventing condensation if done correctly, so it's expert advice well worth taking note of during the winter months.

In the past, drivers have also opened up about the trick online. On Reddit, one was quick to share how using an unlikely household item can help to prevent fogged up windows.

A social media user said: "Shaving foam for car windows. I don't know if this already has been posted, but I only recently came across this life hack.

"So, here in the Netherlands, the fines for fogged windows are pretty high. And, if you drive an older car like me, you probably suffer from fogged up windows [at] this time of year.

"Use shaving foam to stop this! Just put some on your window and spread it with a clean cloth, piece of sponge or whatever! Wipe it completely off, and it should work fine!"

People were quick to share their thoughts, with one writing: "I've used it on my bathroom mirror for almost 10 years. Never did I think to use it on my car windshield."

Another added: "You, my good sir, have made my life a little easier. Thank you and enjoy my little bitty upvote, as I bet you will get plenty more."

A third also replied: "Oh wow, thank you for that. Have tried everything else." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Those who race motorcycles have used it forever. It keeps your goggles from fogging over."

It turns out, the trick does work, and the RAC highlights you can use the product to get the job done. You just need to follow a few rules when doing it.

The key is to ensure it doesn't impact your view of the road, and to use just enough. It could help you to save a lot of time in the mornings.

The website reads: "Take a clean towel and place a dollop of shaving foam onto it. Wipe the windscreen with the towel, spreading the shaving foam over the entire surface.

"Then take another clean towel and wipe off the shaving foam completely. This protective barrier should help stop your windscreen from misting up, but it will need to be regularly reapplied to continue to work.

"Another useful item to help demist your car is a demister pad. These can be purchased over at the RAC Shop."

To make sure you do it properly, you will have to spread the cream thin and even. You can rub it over the interior surface of the windscreen, mirrors or windows.

Then, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the foam off. You need to buff the glass until it's completely clear and streak-free, as nothing should block your view.
