Drivers paying more than they need to at the pump could save money with an RAC tip. The motoring experts have warned drivers that they could be missing out on cheaper options if they only visit their local petrol station, but drivers don't need to travel far to check competing prices.

Instead, drivers could use the myRAC app to find 'the best price' on fuel. Sharing advice for motorists, the RAC posted a Facebook video explaining how drivers could benefit from checking the app before filling up.

In the video, a team member asked viewers: "Are you still relying on your local petrol station for your fuel? Well, you might be missing out on cheaper prices elsewhere."

He explained: "The government's new Fuel Finder scheme displays prices from every single forecourt nationwide, including independents, so that you can get up-to-date prices within 30 minutes of any change. This Easter could be the most expensive one on the road since the early days of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

"The average price of unleaded has now risen by [19.2p] a litre since the end of February, and with diesel hitting a three-year high, households are really feeling the effects of the conflict in the Middle East. As the average price of petrol is likely to go above [152p] a litre in the next week, and diesel heading to [181p], it is hoped that the new level of transparency from forecourts will boost competition and help the average household save on fuel by choosing cheaper options."

According to the RAC, the method helps drivers make sure they're 'getting the best price possible.' Concluding the video, the team member said: "So, what's the easiest way to check?

"Open the myRAC app and use the built-in RAC fuel finder to see pump prices and find the cheapest petrol or diesel near you. So the next time you need to fill up, skip the guesswork."

In the caption, the RAC added that the prices quoted were correct as of March 30. The caption said: "With fuel prices on the rise, you could be missing out on cheaper options nearby. The myRAC app can help you find the best price before you fill up, using data from the Government's new Fuel Finder scheme."

Information on the Fuel Finder service is available on the GOV.UK website. It said: "Fuel Finder is a UK government service that brings together live retail fuel prices and forecourt information across the UK.

"The service helps motor fuel traders to meet their reporting duties, authorised organisations to find and share trusted open data, and people to report issues they spot at the forecourt."
