For weeks, it was known that Colton Herta was set for a jump to Formula 2, but the move only became official once his team was announced. Now the final puzzle piece is in place: Herta will contest the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Hitech TGR. This marks a major shift for the American driver, who is stepping up from seven seasons in IndyCar to chase his ultimate dream Formula 1.
As a nine-time IndyCar winner and 2024 series runner-up, Herta is no rookie to racing success. He made his European single-seater debut in 2015, competing in Formula 4 and Euroformula Open before returning to America. Signing with Cadillac’s Formula 1 team as a test driver opened the door to this new path. Competing on F1 weekends in F2 gives him vital experience with the European circuits, Pirelli tyres, and F1-aligned race formats. It also helps him earn crucial FIA Super Licence points necessary for F1 eligibility.
Herta expressed excitement about the challenge ahead: “I’m proud of my time in IndyCar but joining F2 is a chance to race on the Formula 1 calendar and test myself against the world’s best young drivers.” He praised Hitech’s reputation and is eager to adapt to the new machinery and style of racing.
Hitech’s team manager Clive Hatton welcomed the signing, emphasizing Herta’s professionalism and talent and highlighting the challenge but clear goal of progressing to Formula 1. Cadillac’s F1 CEO Dan Towriss described the move as “an important next step” to integrate Herta fully into the F1 program.
The season kicks off in March in Melbourne alongside the Australian Grand Prix the beginning of what looks to be a defining year for Colton Herta’s racing career.
