After years of anticipation, Toyota has finally pulled the covers off the Land Cruiser FJ a modern reinterpretation of the popular FJ Cruiser. Previewed as a prototype ahead of the Japan Mobility Show, this compact off-roader borrows the rugged styling cues of full-sized Land Cruisers while standing ready to carve its own niche in the 4x4 world.

The Land Cruiser FJ measures roughly 4.5 meters long, packing a robust off-road pedigree into a smaller, more agile frame roughly the size of a Land Rover Defender 90. Power comes from a 2.7-liter petrol engine, defying earlier rumors of an electric drivetrain. Production is set for mid-2026, largely centered in Thailand, aiming first at Asian and select markets.

Here’s the catch ... the FJ won’t officially arrive in key western markets like the USA or Europe. Toyota’s strategy appears focused on emerging markets craving affordable, tough, no-frills 4x4s rather than competing directly with high-end SUVs overseas.

For fans of the classic FJ Cruiser missing that rugged, retro vibe, the Land Cruiser FJ might be the closest thing on the horizon. It’s a fresh take that blends nostalgia with modern durability, but you’ll have to look abroad if you want one in your driveway.
