The 2025 season recently came to a close with the finale at Phoenix Raceway.

Denny Hamlin was cruising to his first career championship before a caution sent the race into overtime. A two tire call from Larson and instead it was Larson who claimed his second career championship.

And it’s highly likely this is the last time we’ll see that format. NASCAR has strongly hinted that the playoffs will look different for the 2026 season.

What does that mean? We don’t know. But, it’s most likely that the one-race championship is going away.

Mike Forde is NASCAR’s managing director of racing communications. He provided some light on the upcoming announcement…

NASCAR says they are considering removing the playoffs

“Where it stands right now… I don’t think the playoff committee is going to meet again,” Mike Forde stated via the Hauler Talk podcast.

“I think we have gotten all the feedback that we needed from them. Awesome job, by the way, from the playoff committee.”

“Now, it’s in NASCAR’s hands,” Forde said.

“They’re going to take all the feedback they got from every walk of life and every thought on the spectrum from no playoffs whatsoever to keeping it how it is and really beating that all up. They’re announcements to come.”

“Honestly, I don’t know where it is. It could be in two weeks, it could be in two months.”
