Brits are being urged to drive carefully as snow forecast maps show major cities are due to be buried as a result of Storm Goretti. Low temperatures are already a cause for concern but more so if you're planning to drive.
Now with weather warnings in place and households told to scatter salt or sand on their driveways, one driving instructor shared two common mistakes you could be making in the car when it's slightly slippery outside. The Art School of Motoring is a 5* rated driving school with DVSA approved instructors who often share important advice on TikTok with their 1,800 followers.
Just recently, the page shared a demonstration to show you should avoid over-accelerating and using brakes sharply.
The instructor said in a clip: "So as you can see this is an icy road. I'm just going to demonstrate – do you hear that noise, that's what happens when you over-accelerate on an icy road especially with an automatic car where you can't drop gears."
Sharing advice, the expert added: "It's best to keep a very light foot on the accelerator when you're going downhill like that.
"Just ease off the accelerator, stay close to the brakes and very gently apply them.
"Try not to sharp brake to lose traction that's the little quick handy tip for driving in ice if you have to drive in ice."
According to RAC, braking distances can increase tenfold on ice compared with a dry road. This means it's important to leave up to 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front.
Always remember that tyres grip less efficiently in cold conditions, so even those the temperature is above zero and there's no ice, you should still take care.
RAC added: "Winter tyres offer more grip and can significantly increase performance in icy conditions."
