A pair of used car experts have taken to YouTube to urge motorists to avoid buying a certain type of vehicle that, despite often being reliable, they believe is incredibly overrated. Reputation can be one of the major deciding factors over what type of car a driver chooses, with models that have a strong following often being much more expensive than rivals.
However, Adam Morris and Jim Hull from ReDriven have warned drivers that some popular models are not worth the extra money. In a recent video, Adam suggested that viewers think twice before buying a used Ford Ranger. He explained, "I think you saw this one coming. It's the Ford Ranger. We're talking the T6, so models made between 2016 and 2024. These ones had a 2.2-litre, 3.2-litre, and 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel with the full four-wheel-drive dual-cab body. The Ranger Raptor can be a good thing. Sure, you lose a bit of the towing capacity, but how many owners are really using these things to their full capacity? Most of them just potter around town showing off."
Whilst the Ranger has been a part of the Ford range in America since the early 1980s, the model has only recently gained popularity in the UK, with the launch of the facelifted T6 in 2015.
Adam noted that they are particularly enjoyable to drive compared to other dual-cab pickup trucks on the market, particularly the Raptor variants which added more power and rugged looks.
However, Adam warned that most pre-owned Ford Rangers have had a tough life, which could result in mechanical issues later in the model's life. As a result, when buying a pre-owned example, it is a good idea to check the pickup's service history to see how well it has been kept.
Adam highlighted that the Ford Ranger is hardly an unreliable car, but many of the owners do not have any mechanical sympathy.
He added: "They have a huge modification scene here, but, and this is going to be controversial, I just think that one of the reasons these are overrated is due to the owners. In the used market, you get people who abuse them with no mechanical sympathy and then, further down the track, some other poor guy will buy it.
"You see it all the time - people driving them like complete maniacs, that I feel so much for the next person buying that car. They're one of the best driving dual-cab pickup trucks on the market, but they're still not worth the money."
Later in the video, Jim also noted that used examples of the Toyota Hilux are also overrated, with many priced significantly higher than rival models.
He continued: "These things have great reliability, excellent support network, heaps of modification potential, and they retain their value. It's got all of that, but in terms of performance and comfort, it's not really any better than the rivals.
"The trouble is that you can't really justify the 'Toyota tax' with these, you just can't. I mean you're paying so much for a dual-cab, and when you're going over some ruts or bumps, you're feeling the whole floppy body shaking - it's terrible."
