Wicked winter weather struck west Michigan on Monday, and it appears to have caused a massive pileup on I-196 in Zeeland.
According to Michigan State Police, roads were icy, and there was a crash that ended up ensnaring more than 100 vehicles. Numerous injuries have been reported, although none are believed to be fatal.

That’s pretty remarkable given the scope of the incident and the fact that it involved around 30-40 semis. However, authorities noted some vehicles managed to escape unharmed and were just caught up in the chaos.
Drone footage from Chicago & Midwest Storm Chasers shows a long line of vehicles, including approximately 10 semis that crashed into one another and effectively blocked the highway. Countless other vehicles can be seen in ditches, while several others appear to be simply parked on the roadway. That being said, there are a number of individual accidents scattered throughout.

Authorities closed I-196 in both directions between exits 62 and 55. They’re now working to remove all non-involved vehicles from the highway, although this is easier said than done.
As for drivers, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said stranded motorists are being taken to Hudsonville High School using school and MAX Transit buses. Once they arrive, they can wait in the cafeteria until someone comes to pick them up.
The Detroit News reports that between 9 and 12 people were injured, and just getting to the accident scene took first responders up to 45 minutes. Some reportedly resorted to using snowmobiles.
On the bright side, it sounds like conditions were so bad that many drivers were only traveling at around 20-30 mph (32- 48 km) before the pileup. The low speeds likely help to explain why there were no fatalities and why a number of vehicles didn’t suffer any damage.
