On a foggy January morning, Kaleb Whitby was driving his pickup eastbound on Oregon’s I-84, a familiar route from Washington to his work in Council, Idaho. Conditions were treacherous thick fog and sheets of black ice made for a dangerous combination that set the stage for one of the most harrowing highway accidents ever recorded.
Whitby’s pickup collided with a jackknifed semi-truck, flipping and crumpling under the crushing weight of two semi-trailers in a massive 26-vehicle pileup near Baker City. Witnesses and first responders feared the worst when they saw his pickup pinned tight between the two giant trucks.
But to their disbelief and hope, they found Whitby fully conscious and remarkably composed amid the twisted wreckage. His injuries were surprisingly minor: a black eye, a few scratches, and some bruises the physical toll far less severe than the catastrophic damage to his Chevy Silverado ... Yes! Kaleb recalled bracing for impact, gripping the steering wheel tightly, and praying through the roar and crunch of metal folding around him. The sound of the truck pushing his vehicle into the narrow tunnel between two trailers was deafening. He later described how close he was to being crushed; a mere few inches could have spelled death.
Rescue came swiftly thanks to the presence of other truckers and stranded motorists who heard his cries for help. With tools and sheer determination, they managed to free his foot, enabling him to crawl out through a tight gap before standing and retreating to safety.
What makes Whitby’s survival so extraordinary is not only the crushing forces involved but the fact he endured and walked away from what should have been a fatal crash. Kaleb’s story went viral due to an iconic photo showing only his head peeking above the wreckage.
