Liberty Media Corporation has officially completed its acquisition of MotoGP™, marking a major milestone in the global motorsport landscape. The €4.2 billion (approximately $4.9 billion) deal, finalized in early July 2025 after receiving unconditional approval from the European Commission, brings MotoGP under the same ownership umbrella as Formula 1, both now part of Liberty Media’s expanding Formula One Group.
Under the terms of the acquisition, Liberty Media has taken an 84% controlling stake in Dorna Sports, the exclusive commercial rights holder of the MotoGP World Championship since 1991. The remaining 16% of ownership remains with MotoGP’s existing management team, ensuring continuity in leadership. Long-time CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta and his senior management team, including COO Enrique Aldama, Chief Commercial Officer Dan Rossomondo, and Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta, will continue to run the day-to-day operations of the championship from their Madrid headquarters.
The integration of MotoGP into Liberty Media’s portfolio complements its existing motorsport and entertainment assets, which include Formula 1 and the sports and entertainment event company Quint. Liberty Media’s board and executive leadership, featuring key figures such as Chase Carey and Sean Bratches—who played instrumental roles in Formula 1’s recent commercial success—have joined the Dorna board, signaling a collaborative approach to growing MotoGP’s global footprint.
Liberty Media’s acquisition is seen as the beginning of a new era for MotoGP, with plans to leverage Liberty’s expertise in digital media, fan engagement, and global expansion to accelerate the sport’s growth. The company aims to deepen connections with MotoGP’s passionate core fanbase while expanding its reach to new audiences worldwide.
The deal had faced regulatory scrutiny, with the European Commission conducting an in-depth Phase II investigation to assess competition concerns due to Liberty’s existing ownership of Formula 1. However, the Commission ultimately gave unconditional approval, recognizing the evolving nature of the motorsport market and the potential benefits of the merger.
Dorna Sports oversees not only MotoGP but also related championships such as Moto2, Moto3, MotoE, the World Superbike Championship, and the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship. This acquisition positions Liberty Media as a dominant force in global motorsport, with a diverse portfolio spanning premier car and motorcycle racing series.
With the transaction now complete, Liberty Media’s Formula One Group comprises Formula 1, MotoGP, Quint, and other minority investments, creating a powerful platform to innovate and expand in the sports and entertainment sectors. The partnership between Liberty Media and MotoGP’s experienced management team promises to deliver exciting developments for fans, teams, and commercial partners alike in the years ahead.
