Learning to drive isn't easy for everyone. In order to begin the process, first you must get a provisional driving licence, then take lessons with a professional instructor before preparing for both the theory and practical driving test.

Passing nowadays is getting increasingly hard especially as DVSA confirmed a major UK driving rule change from next year. As of spring 2026, driving theory tests will incorporate new CPR questions and, for the first time, queries about defibrillators to increase cardiac arrest survival rates. Now on TikTok, one theory test expert revealed how to boost your chances of a pass by avoiding one simple mistake.

Annie, known as @theorytestpractice to her 1.2million followers, said: "Why are most people failing the theory test? Do you know why it is? People get an app and go through questions or even worse they just go through mock tests."

Speaking about the method, she added: "Now apps are really great for practicing questions of course, but that's not the way to learn theory, that's the way to practice is when you've done your learning or learn while you're doing the questions.

"So learn the rules of roundabouts and then answer questions about the rules of roundabouts. But if you just memorise the answer to a question and you go to your real test, you're going to see a different question.

"The same topic, the same understanding is needed but it's different words and different answer options. That's why most people are failing, if you don't want to fail, you could read books if you wanted to, you can get someone to help you or use my pro course."

Annie said her pro course has been designed to take you step-by-step through everything you need. Alternatively, if you're in a hurry, the expert suggests using her quick pass course, known as her standard course.

Learn the Highway Code: Make sure you read through the official Highway Code to understand the rules of the road.

Use official and practice resources: DVSA's learning materials could help you practice and try a mock test before the real deal.

Focus on understanding: Don't just memorise answers from apps. Make sure you understand the reasoning behind the correct answers to help tackle any questions which are difficultly worded.

Practice hazard perception: Pay close attention to the hazard perception section as this is a key part of the test. Practicing will help you recognise and respond to developing hazards more effectively.

Ask for help: If you're stuck on anything, combine your theory test learning with practical driving sessions with your instructor. This should help you, alternatively ask your family or friends.
