The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s biggest race of the season. The race is scheduled for February 15th at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR recently launched the Open Exemption Provisional. The new provisional was met with some criticism.

This provisional made its way into the rule book beginning with the 2025 season. It allows “world-class” drivers from NASCAR as well as other forms of motorsports to apply for the provisional weeks ahead of the event.

He has been approved.

If Johnson does not qualify for the Daytona 500, he will start the race regardless. If that happens, Johnson will roll 41st on the field but he will not earn prize money or points if the provisional is needed.

Indycar legend Hélio Castroneves was the first driver to use the new provisional.

Johnson is a 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. He’s also a two-time winner of the Daytona 500.

Beyond Daytona, Johnson is also scheduled to race on June 21 race at Naval Base Coronado near San Diego. And, for this event, he’ll be racing in the Cup Series as well as the Truck Series.

TRICON Garage will field the Truck for Johnson in the event.

“Racing in San Diego means everything to me – it’s home,” said Johnson.

“Getting behind the wheel of a Truck Series entry has been on my mind for a while. The competition is incredible, and doing it at a historic street race on a Navy base in my hometown? That’s special.”

Johnson added, “I’m grateful to TRICON and Carvana for making this happen, and honestly, I can’t think of a better way to honor our military and celebrate where I’m from.”

The Naval Base Coronado is a street circuit that will be built directly on the Naval Base. It coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

This will mark his first NASCAR Truck Series event since 2008.
