Lochie Hughes stepped into Andretti Global’s No. 98 Dallara DW12-Honda IndyCar for the first time recently, and it was more than just a test run it was a detailed blueprint for his racing future. This 23-year-old Australian, fresh off an impressive rookie season in INDY NXT where he scored two wins and eight podiums, now sets his sights on the heavier, more powerful world of IndyCar racing.
Racing in the DW12, a machine driven by champions like Josef Newgarden, meant Hughes faced a stark physical upgrade. Without power steering and packing several thousand pounds of downforce, the car demanded more strength and endurance than his previous ride. Hughes embraced the challenge, completing around 100 laps and improving steadily through multiple tire sets.
“I had to manage the weight and grip, the car doesn’t turn like an INDY NXT vehicle,” Hughes explained. The experience reinforced the need for a physical transformation alongside sharper racecraft if he is to make the step up in 2027.
Beyond the test, Andretti Global confirmed Hughes will return for the 2026 INDY NXT season alongside Seb Murray while also taking on the role of IndyCar reserve driver. Team principal Rob Edwards is confident Hughes can contend for the INDY NXT championship next year, pointing to how second seasons build maturity and results.
For Hughes, the road is clear: conquer Indy NXT in 2026, gain experience as a reserve in IndyCar, and then make the leap. This test was the starting pistol to a demanding, exciting 12 months the rookie has a plan, a team behind him, and an eye on the prize.
