Motorists are being urged to act now or risk a hefty fine and even a driving ban in serious cases. The caution comes from motoring experts, who say that whilst it may not be an issue today, it can quickly become one tomorrow within seconds.
The motoring experts at LeaseCar.uk warned that dirt buildup is common at this time of year, largely due to road salt and spray caused by the UK’s severe weather. Alongside this, frequent storms can leave vehicles covered in grime while driving.
With this in mind, drivers are reminded to clean their windows and other key parts of their vehicle before heading out on the road. As mentioned, these conditions can be made even worse when driving in a storm.
Earlier this week, the Met Office issued a weather warning for Storm Chandra, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall. Drivers should be aware that the 1986 Road Vehicles Regulations makes it illegal to drive without a clear view of the road and surrounding traffic.

The Highway Code also states that windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from any obstructions to visibility. This underlines the importance of regular vehicle maintenance.
Drivers who fail to keep a clear view of the road could face a fine of up to £1,000, three penalty points, and even discretionary disqualification. For those operating commercial or goods vehicles, including buses and coaches, fines for obstructed windscreens can reach £2,500, according to Devon Live.

In more serious situations, motorists may also be charged with careless or inconsiderate driving if their actions fall below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver.
