The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has shed light on an important Highway Code rule that drivers need to be aware of. Abiding by this guidance is particularly important during adverse weather conditions, including severe fog.

Posting on X, the DVSA said: "Rule 226 of the Highway Code says you must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you must switch them off when visibility improves."

The DVSA's warning comes after startling research from Aviva last year, which revealed that one in seven people (14%) do not use headlights in low-visibility conditions, making it harder to see and be seen on the road. Among 1,600 drivers surveyed, a further 10% were also unaware of the rules regarding headlight use when visibility was severely reduced.

At the time, Martin Smith, Motor Claims Manager at Aviva, said: "It’s worrying to see drivers incorrectly using their lights and misunderstanding the rules of the road, particularly as our research shows that two thirds would prefer to drive rather than walk a short distance.

"Not only is this dangerous as it could make it difficult for other road users to see you, it is likely to also impact your own vision – increasing your chances of having a collision.

"Lights can also dazzle other drivers, particularly when roads are wet or there is snow around, so it’s important to pay particular attention when the weather is bad."

In light of this, Aviva experts urged drivers to brush up on their Highway Code knowledge, especially before driving in the dark or in adverse weather conditions. Making sure your lights function correctly can also help prevent dangerous accidents.

Rules 234 to 236 also urge drivers to check their mirrors and take precautions when driving in fog. This includes the following:

The Highway Code's Rule 234 adds: "If 'Fog' is shown on a sign but the road is clear, be prepared for a bank of fog or drifting patchy fog ahead. Even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself in thick fog."

Meanwhile, Rule 236 continues: "You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves."
