Adrien Fourmaux has retired from Rally del Paraguay after the conclusion of the event, promoting Hyundai team-mate Ott Tänak to fourth overall.
Fourmaux had looked set to secure a career-best World Rally Championship finish of second in Paraguay, but late rain in the powerstage – which also hampered rally winner Sébastien Ogier – cost him overall position to both Elfyn Evans and Thierry Neuville.
The Frenchman ended up just 2.1 seconds ahead of his title-chasing team-mate Tänak in the overall classification before he was retired from the rally.
DirtFish understands Fourmaux’s car suffered a gearbox problem, with a post-powerstage retirement allowing Hyundai to change it ahead of Rally Chile without incurring a penalty.
It doesn’t affect Hyundai’s manufacturers’ points haul from Paraguay as it still has two cars finishing third and fourth, but it does boost Tänak’s drivers’ title bid as he gains an extra two points.
That means Tänak is now 18 points adrift of championship leader Elfyn Evans rather than 20, while Kalle Rovanperä has also moved to within seven points (instead of nine) as he climbs from sixth to fifth position overall.
Ogier therefore slips to third in the championship, but that gives him a better start position for Rally Chile in two weeks’ time.
