An issue with recently introduced fuel, and how it interacts with fuel tanks aboard Rally1 cars, is suspected to be the cause of several retirements at Acropolis Rally Greece.
Former World Rally Championship fuel supplier P1 Fuels went into liquidation before Safari Rally Kenya, with TotalEnergies stepping in as an immediate replacement from Rally Islas Canarias in April.
Though that sudden switch had gone smoothly prior to Greece’s WRC round, multiple cars developed issues – leading to three retirements in the Rally1 field.
On Friday Sami Pajari retired at the exit control of a refuel zone between stages six and seven, followed one stage later by Mārtiņš Sesks in similar circumstances.
Come Saturday, Sesks’ M-Sport team-mate Grégoire Munster retired once reaching the day’s final service – again with a similar issue to those of Pajari and Sesks.
A statement from the FIA to DirtFish said: “The FIA has been made aware of an issue affecting the fuel tanks on certain Rally1 cars and is supporting the relevant teams and suppliers to understand and resolve the issue.”
