The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is encouraging motorists to ensure they have essential documentation readily available in case of an emergency.
Across the UK, it remains a legal requirement for all vehicles to display a number plate. Failure to have a number plate, or displaying it incorrectly, could result in a fine of up to £1,000 and your vehicle could fail its MOT examination.
To prevent this occurring, you may require a replacement number plate to be manufactured, though it's not simply a matter of paying and receiving a new plate. Government guidance emphasises that you may need a replacement number plate created for various reasons, such as damage, loss, or theft.
Posting on X, the DVLA stated: "Number plate lost, stolen or damaged? Registered number plate suppliers will ask for identity documents and proof you can use the registration number."
When visiting a registered supplier for a new number plate, you must verify your name and address. You must also demonstrate that you are authorised to display the registration number you're requesting.
