Motorists across the UK are being warned about a surprisingly common oversight that could lead to a fine of up to £5,000, penalty points, and even a driving ban - and many drivers don’t even realise it’s an offence.

Car experts at Number 1 Plates warn that thousands of drivers may unknowingly risk a careless driving charge by neglecting a seemingly harmless yet essential responsibility.

While most drivers keep an eye on tyre tread, lights and mirrors, only a few realise that the interior condition of their car could land them in legal trouble.

The issue? Driving with a cluttered or obstructed windscreen.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 police can charge you with careless or inconsiderate driving if they believe your view is impaired - even by items on the dashboard, dusty glass, or loose objects inside the car.

This offence carries a maximum fine of £5,000, up to nine penalty points, and in the most serious cases, disqualification from driving.

"Most drivers would never think a bit of dashboard clutter or windscreen grime could land them in legal trouble - but it can," says a spokesperson from Number 1 Plates.

"We’re seeing increasing awareness of plate and exterior regulations, but not enough focus on what’s happening inside the car. Police have full authority to issue a careless driving charge if they feel your view is compromised, no matter how minor it might seem."
