Motorists are being reminded about a crucial item they should always have at their disposal while driving.

With sunny and warm weather predicted for next week, it's an essential time for drivers to heed this advice. It may seem obvious, but a pair of sunglasses can significantly improve your driving experience.

Drivers should always keep a pair within arm's reach to be prepared for any weather conditions. Keeping a dedicated pair of sunglasses in the car is a smart move so you don't forget them when rushing out in the morning. This follows the news that warned Brits to never put one banned item in garden bins as you could face punishment.

Birmingham Live reports that drivers involved in a collision could be held accountable if sun glare was a factor and they didn't have sunglasses.

Experts have also warned drivers to ensure they have the right type of 'sunnies' as some have lenses that are too dark and unsuitable for driving.

Category 1, 2 and 3 sunglasses are suitable for driving but category 4 aren't. This is due to them featuring the darkest of lenses, which are designed for extremely bright conditions such as water sport activities or high-altitude environments where intense sunlight and glare are common. These lenses are said to block 92-97% of visible light - which whilst offer maximum protection from UV rays, make them a poor choice for safe driving.

Note that most standard shades available in shops should be suitable. Danny Toffel, CEO of Watches2U, said: "People think sunglasses are always a smart choice in the sun, but not all lenses are created equal".

He added: "If your shades are too dark, distort colour or reduce contrast - especially in low light or shady conditions - they could be classed as unsafe to drive in".

"Even some wraparound sports glasses or polarised models can reduce visibility in certain driving conditions," continued Toffel, saying that "wearing them while driving at dusk, through tunnels or under trees could affect your ability to react in time".

Mr Toffel went on, explaining: "Sports sunglasses are often great for shielding your eyes during exercise, but they're not always suitable for the road".

"Some wraparound styles can limit peripheral vision, and darker lenses - especially those classed as Category 4 - can impair visibility in daylight driving conditions".

Concluding, Mr Toffel ended by sharing that "it sounds simple, but having a proper pair of driving sunglasses in your glovebox can make all the difference - You want lenses that protect your eyes without affecting your vision - because even momentary glare or distortion can be dangerous behind the wheel".
