A new documentary, Driven: The DirtFish Women in Motorsport Story, premiered on Sunday

Words by Luke Barry

This movement is a journey, not a destination. But ever so often it’s important to reflect upon the milestone moments as we strive to improve the sport for good.

Sunday was that moment, with the launch of ‘Driven: The DirtFish Women in Motorsport Story’.

Premiering at DirtFish owner Steve Rimmer’s private car collection – as well as virtually on YouTube – the hour-long documentary celebrates women in all areas of motorsport, highlighting the growth of the DirtFish Women in Motorsport Summit and now Driver Development Program.

Sitting down and reliving this entire journey – which has gone from just an idea to a worldwide movement in four short years – was an emotional moment for DirtFish Women in Motorsport coordinator Josie Rimmer.

“I’m overwhelmed,” she said. “Eliot [Barnard] our videographer did such an amazing job clearly capturning the tone of the event and the movement. I’m really grateful to have the Summit documented like this.

Josie has masterminded DirtFish Women in Motorsport's success

“It was a unique experience as the film started to roll out,” Josie added, “because while we were watching in this space the virtual premiere also went live, so I was sitting towards the back of the room and also participating in the YouTube chat room, so it was really neat to be able to see the in-person responses as well as the online responses.

“Once that initial intro starts to play showing the DirtFish property, it just pulls you right back there. Watching this documentary unfold really let me remember all of the joy, laughs and connection we were able to foster.”

Joining Josie and several others at the Seattle premiere were DirtFish WiM drivers Aoife Raftery and Michele Abbate.

Aoife said: “In four years it’s amazing to see the work that’s been done and how many women have already been inspired and got involved in this sport. Josie has put so much into this program, I’m just so lucky and really proud to represent DirtFish and the DirtFish Women in Motorsport Program. It’s incredible to see how far it’s come and how far it’s going to go.”

Michele added: “It’s super cool to see the growth of the DirtFish Women in Motorsport Program – it’s surreal to be an integral part of the mission. Josie works so hard and you can feel it and see it, and at events like this you can tell her heart is really in this. I’m seriously so excited to see where we go in the future.”

Rally has never been just for the boys

So what of that future? Having put so much work in already, the plan is to keep this positive momentum going.

Josie: “Aoife said it best in the documentary: our plan is to take the Women in Motorsport initiative all the way to the top. I want a DirtFish Women in Motorsport car running in the World Rally Championship, I would love for it to be built by a crew of all-women – I want to take it to the top. That’s the big answer.

“On a smaller scale, like Michelle Miller said in the documentary, it’s all of the work everyday that makes the big differences. It’s all the little steps that end up bridging a pretty broad gap, so what I want for the Women in Motorsport initiative and Driver Program is to just keep pushing every day – little by little inspiring one little girl or young person at a time to get involved, and just seeing how far we can push it.”

‘Driven: The DirtFish Women in Motorsport Story’ is available to watch now on YouTube.
