Petrol and diesel drivers filling up ahead of the Christmas getaway could save money by topping up at the UK’s cheapest supermarket fuel station. New analysis from RAC Fuel Watch reveals that Asda offers the cheapest prices for petrol and diesel at supermarkets.

Asda is charging customers just 134.0p for petrol, down by almost 2p per litre on Sainsbury’s, which was the most costly. Asda also offers the lowest diesel fees, 0.6p cheaper than other competitors and around 2p cheaper than Sainsbury’s. Morrisons and Tesco were the second and third cheapest, with Morrisons also selling petrol at 134.0p per litre, on par with Asda.

Asda operates more than 300 petrol stations in the UK.

The fees are lower than the UK’s average petrol and diesel prices, which are around 1p per litre more expensive. According to the RAC, the UK average petrol charge stands at 135.60p per litre with diesel at 143.98p per litre.

Supermarkets are generally the most economical place to fill up a vehicle due to lower operating costs, economies of scale and strict competition between brands. Supermarket fuel contains fewer of the performance-enhancing additives, but all petrol and diesel compounds still meet the UK base quality standards.

It means drivers will often find fuel is cheaper at supermarkets than at other major oil retailers such as Shell, BP and Esso.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams previously told Express.co.uk: “Fuel is generally 3-4p cheaper at supermarkets compared to the UK average.

“Over the years, the supermarkets have built a reputation for selling good-value fuel, and as a result, they dominate the market. As they sell so much fuel they are also better placed to take advantage of wholesale price dips than other retailers who don’t buy new supply as often.

“There is very little difference between the supermarkets on average although drivers can find significant differences from area to area, particularly if there’s strong competition from independent retailers.”

The cost of fuel is on the up, with average petrol and diesel prices rising at their fastest rates since April 2024 last month. Average petrol prices went up 2.17p in November, with diesel costs up 3.84p across the month.
