The UK’s cheapest supermarket fuel has been revealed on the same day that new petrol and diesel rules set to impact drivers across the UK come into effect. Latest data compiled by RAC Fuel Watch has revealed that Asda is the cheapest store to top-up, with the major chain offering the most affordable petrol and diesel rates.

The RAC data is taken directly from the Competition and Market Authority’s road fuel price data scheme, which runs the new fuel finer service. Up until now, petrol stations were able to voluntarily update their prices with the CMA. However, as of Monday 2 February, petrol stations are legally obliged to release their latest prices within 30 minutes of any updates.

Asda operates more than 300 petrol stations in the UK.

It allows customers to quickly check locations nearby and secure cheaper rates, with the Government suggesting the move could save customers around £40 per year.

RAC Fuel Watch data has Asda as the most affordable major supermarket chain, with petrol prices at an average of 128.9p per litre. The store's diesel is also the cheapest of the major four chains, with drivers set to pay just 137.7p per litre to fill their vehicles.

Morrisons is the next cheapest for petrol, with drivers set to pay 129.2p per litre to fill up their cars. Tesco is next with drivers paying 129.7p per litre, followed by Sainsbury’s which charges customers around 129.8p per litre.

When it comes to diesel, Tesco is the second cheapest store behind Asda, with customers paying 138.3p per litre. Morrisons was third with average costs at 138.4p, with Sainsbury’s again rounding out the top four with fuel priced at 138.7p per litre.

On its launch, RAC head of policy Simon Williams welcomed the launch of the Government's new fuel finder scheme, claiming the tool will help road users secure “better value”.

He said: “We hope this is the start of the journey to cheaper fuel prices around the UK. The Government has set up this scheme with the intention of increasing competition among retailers to give drivers better value at the pumps.

“As a growing number of the country’s 8,300 forecourts submit their prices on a daily basis, drivers will be able to easily find the cheapest forecourts near them using their favoured app or sat-nav."
