Buick hasn’t sold a sedan in the United States since 2020, when the automaker discontinued production of the last Regal (even though the nameplate lives on in China). Now, though, a new report alleges that Buick might return to the segment.

Previous rumors suggested General Motors would continue to offer at least two sedans once the Cadillac CT4 dies—one will be the next-generation GT5, which will ride on an iteration of the Alpha 2 platform. The other could be a Buick, according to sources who spoke with GM Authority2018 Buick Regal GS

GM is allegedly developing "multiple variants" of its new sedan platform, but it’s unclear exactly what that means. We know the platform will feature combustion power, but that’s it. There could be some form of electrification, too, as automakers across the board shift from developing full electric vehicles to hybrids.

We know GM will build the next-generation CT5 at its Grand River Assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan, where it builds the CT4/5. With the CT4 axed, there should be production capacity available for Buick or any other GM brand to build a sedan. A new Chevrolet Impala, perhaps?

Outside of the United States, Buick has a strong sedan portfolio. It continues to sell the Verano Pro, the Real, and the LaCrosse in China.

Motor1’s Take: We are always excited at the possibility of a new sedan, but one from Buick is especially intriguing. The brand might not sell any cars in the United States right now, but it is finding success with its crossovers and SUVs.
