The Breen family are auctioning one of Craig’s World Rally Championship racing suits in support of the Craig Breen Foundation.
The suit in question is from 2016 when Breen drove for Citroën. He wore it during his first World Rally Car start for the team in Sweden and later in Poland, and also at the Circuit of Ireland Rally which he won for a second time in a DS3 R5.
Presented in a frame complete with commemorative plaques, bidding is tipped to start at €5,000 with an auctioneer’s estimate of €10,000. All proceeds will go to the Craig Breen Foundation which helps launch the careers of young Irish drivers.
The live auction will take place on Saturday (October 11) during the Gala Dinner of the Déjà Vu Waterford event, but interested telephone bidders are invited to contact Alan Tyndall at alan@rpm-motorsport.com by 12pm Irish time on Wednesday October 8.
Two of Ireland’s most-loved legends Craig Breen and Frank Meagher will be celebrated by stars in cars from around the world at Saturday’s Déjà vu Waterford ’25.
The organizers of the 160-mile, tour-style event have drawn an exceptional entry for a day which will remember World Rally Championship driver Breen and his own hero, 1995 Irish Tarmac champion Meagher.
Fittingly, the first car away from the start at Dungarvan Park Hotel at 9.30am on Saturday will be the ex-Meagher Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, driven by Craig’s father Ray and co-driven by his sister Kellie. D934 SVW is the car the Tipperary man used to win the 1992 Circuit of Ireland – a result which captured the imagination and forever held the fascination of Craig.
Donagh Kelly brings the event up to date with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC Breen drove to second overall on the 2021 Ypres Rally.
Behind the car in which Craig captured his best-ever WRC result comes the car which kept him awake as a child – his father’s MG Metro 6R4. Craig talked fondly of his bedroom wall shaking whenever the Metro was fired up in preparation for a forthcoming event. Sean Cahill drives the 6R4.
DirtFish Women in Motorsport Driver Aoife Raftery and our very own WiM coordinator Josie Rimmer crew the Peugeot 208 T16 Breen used to win three rounds of the 2015 European Rally Championship.
One of the most poignant cars and crews follows at five, with Breen’s co-drivers James Fulton and Paul Nagle sharing the DS3 R5 he used to win the 2016 Circuit of Ireland (while co-driven by Scott Martin). This car belongs to family friend and ardent supporter of Craig, Andrew Fanning.
It’s all about the history from car six, with Jimmy McRae in an Opel Manta 400 followed by Billy Coleman in a Porsche 911 while David Llewellin will be co-driven by Sean Moriarty in an Audi quattro.
Irish superstar Autin MacHale drives a Ford Focus WRC, with Marie Moloney (Manta 400) rounding out the top 10 of what’s expected to be a 145-strong parade of cars. The full field will be on show in par fermé on Friday October 10 in Dungarvan from 2pm to 6pm.
The organizers have asked for onlookers to enjoy the cars, but avoid the temptation to join the parade.
After leaving the start at 9.30am, the first cars are expected to arrive at the Majestic Hotel in Tramore around 11am and travel through Dunmore East Village at 11.30am. The lunch halt will be at Mount Congreve Gardens, near Waterford, from midday. Then it’s on to the Crough Coffee House at Mahon Bridge at 2.30pm with Mahon Falls following before they return to Dungarvan, passing the castle and along the quay before reaching the finish at the Dungarvan Park Hotel at approximately 4pm.
A gala dinner follows but that’s not the end of event, as Sunday offers a cars and coffee gathering in Grattan Square from 10am until 12.30pm.
The event is run in support of chosen charities, the Dungarvan Palliative Care Unit and the Craig Breen Foundation.
