Elevating Luxury and Eco-Responsibility: The Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid
Finally, we’re getting to drive some new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) product from “people’s car” company Volkswagen. By which we mean th...

Introducing the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid, a remarkable plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from Volkswagen's prestigious brand. Priced at $436,000, this magnificently equipped car can be customized further, elevating its price to $606,000.

Bentley, known for its exquisite sports limousines, recognizes the importance of electric power in the evolving automotive landscape. With plans to become fully electric by 2030, the Flying Spur Hybrid represents a transitional model for Bentley New Zealand. While being cautious in its approach, this PHEV shares its basic powertrain with other vehicles in the VW Group family, borrowing from the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. It combines a 2.9-liter twin-turbo petrol V6 engine, an electric motor, and a sizable 18kWh battery. Additionally, a Bentayga SUV Hybrid is on its way, featuring a slightly different engine.

In terms of power and performance, the Hybrid is comparable to the Flying Spur V8, with a negligible 0.1-second difference in the 0-100km/h acceleration. However, it boasts an impressive fuel efficiency rating of 3.2 liters per 100 kilometers according to official figures.

While driving the Hybrid in its electric mode, the car produces a soundtrack that slightly diminishes the overall ambience. Nevertheless, the experience of driving a Bentley with zero powertrain noise is truly magnificent. The EV range is modest at a claimed 40km, considering the car's size and battery capacity. However, during testing, a full charge provided a range of 46km. Bentley argues that 40km is representative of its owners' daily driving needs. The car supports AC charging and can be fully charged in under three hours using a wallbox.

The controls of the Hybrid are nearly identical to the standard Spur, with the addition of an E-Mode switch that allows for toggling between EV Drive, Hybrid, and Hold modes. These modes operate independently of the car's conventional "Bentley" setting, as well as the Comfort, Individual, and Sport drive modes. In Sport mode, the car defaults to battery Hold to maintain consistent performance.

The Flying Spur is renowned for its luxurious cabin and customization options. The Hybrid model continues this tradition, blending modern technology with a traditional ambience. The interior features premium leather and wood finishes, providing a soft and comfortable environment. Unlike the futuristic cabins found in some electric vehicles, Bentley maintains a more classic design, proudly emphasizing its heritage.

A notable feature is the rotating center screen, serving as both a digital infotainment display and a dual-veneer panel with three analogue dials. The screen can be transformed at the press of a button, offering a balance between modern functionality and timeless elegance. However, it's worth noting that the wireless Apple CarPlay option is available, while Android Auto is not supported.

Customization plays a significant role in owning a Bentley, and the Flying Spur Hybrid offers a wide range of options to personalize the vehicle. The Mulliner Driving Specification, priced at $44,354, includes features like larger wheels, special upholstery, and meticulous details such as a metal oil cap. The list of options is extensive, ranging from an $18,800 paintjob to a $5,600 contrast stitching on the seats.

Despite the Hybrid's impressive performance and eco-credentials, choosing between the more characterful V8 or the stunning W12 variants might be tempting for those in the market for such a luxury car. The V8 model will continue to be available for the Flying Spur, while the W12 will soon cease production, with limited orders accepted for a short period.

In conclusion, the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid represents a splendid blend of modern innovation and traditional craftsmanship. Its emotionally and dynamically balanced driving experience is precisely what one would expect from a vehicle of this caliber. While it may be challenging for most people to comprehend the mindset of super-luxury car buyers, the appeal of an exclusive sports limousine with commendable eco-credentials is undeniable. The Flying Spur Hybrid is propelling Bentley forward with style and grace.
