The AA has detailed an easy, quick "test" every driver should carry out before setting off on winter journeys. Recent weeks have seen colder conditions intensify, with hazardous and unpredictable weather including rain, snow, ice, and more expected ahead.

Navigating roads in these conditions can prove nerve-wracking as they become more challenging and potentially dangerous. An AA spokesperson used social media to outline crucial checks drivers should perform before venturing out in wintry conditions.

In the video, posted on Instagram, the AA representative opened with: "Winter is coming but is your car ready?" To begin, he recommended having car batteries inspected, as cold temperatures can cause them to lose charge.

Following this, he demonstrated a useful technique for checking car tyres with a 20p coin. He explained: "Wintery roads need grip - check your tyre tread depth.

"You can do this using a 20p piece. Remember, tyre pressure can also drop in cold weather."

To use this technique for checking tyre tread depth, simply insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyre.

Should the outer band of the coin remain visible, your tread has fallen below the legal threshold - which stands at 1.6mm - and requires professional inspection. Driving in this state could prove both dangerous and illegal.

If the outer band of the coin isn't visible, this indicates your tread depth meets legal requirements. It's recommended to check at least three different points around each tyre to get a more reliable reading of the tread depth.

Keeping proper tread depth is crucial for your vehicle's grip, braking performance, and helping to disperse water to avoid aquaplaning.

Motor retailer Halfords warns: "Driving with worn tyres is not only a serious safety risk, but a costly one too.

"In the UK, the fine for bald tyres is £2,500 plus three points on your licence per tyre, so it's essential to check them monthly for any signs of damage or wear."

The legal minimum tread depth stands at 1.6mm. Halfords notes: "However, most motoring organisations recommend changing your tyres before the tread gets to this level."

Additional advice shared by the AA on Instagram included ensuring you're using "winter grade screen wash to avoid freezing", and preparing an emergency kit containing a blanket, snacks, a torch and a charger in case you become stranded in cold conditions.

Safety must come first when driving. If you lack confidence or feel uncomfortable at the wheel, or if road conditions appear icy or excessively slippery, think carefully about whether your trip is absolutely necessary.
