When Shelby’s famous run with Ford was coming to a close, he wasn’t ready to hang up his racing boots. Instead, he started sketching out his next big thing. He wanted to call it the Cobra III, a nod to his world-beating Cobras, but Ford had already locked down that name. So Shelby, ever the Texan, called his new project the Lone Star.

This car is special from every angle. The body? Hand-shaped aluminum, crafted by masters in England—no two panels exactly alike, all gleaming with that old-school race car vibe. Underneath, Shelby went bold: instead of the usual front-engine setup, he put a high-strung 289 V8 smack in the middle, right behind the seats. That engine, paired with a slick ZF 5-speed manual, meant the Lone Star wasn’t just built for straight-line speed—it was made to carve up corners and leave jaws on the floor.

He wanted to build vehicles with emphasis on safety after reading Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed", starting with a sports car to draw attention. Drawing further attention were the car's gullwing doors and competition with the Chevrolet Corvette.

Production of the vehicle, the Bricklin SV-1, began in 1974. To save weight, fiberglass was used for the body, and a colored acrylic outer layer meant that painting the car was unnecessary and the car was resistant to minor scratches. Outsourced parts abounded: the rear suspension was from the Datsun 510, the rear axle was from the AMC Hornet, the braking system had parts from Datsun, Opel, and Toyota, and the tilt steering wheel was from Chrysler

Initially, the engine was a 5.9-liter V8 from AMC producing 220 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque, resulting in a 7.2-second 0-60 time and a 107-MPH (172-KPH) top speed. For 1975, Bricklin was forced to switch to the 5.8-liter Ford Windsor V8, which developed 175 horsepower and 286 pound-feet of torque, causing a 9.0-second 0-60 time.

Three transmission choices were available. AMC-engined cars were fitted with either a BorgWarner T10 four-speed manual or a Chrysler Torque Commander three-speed automatic, whilst Ford-engined cars came only with a Ford FMX three-speed automatic. Color choices consisted of Safety Red, Safety Orange, Safety Green, Safety White, and Safety Suntan.

Throughout its lifetime, the SV-1 was plagued with issues. Firstly, each door weighed 90 pounds (41 kg), so a power-operated hydraulic system was implemented to open them. However, opening one door while closing the other caused the system to fail, making opening the doors difficult for many.

Secondly, the car was planned to sell for around $4,000, but it cost $7,490 ($39,741 in 2021 currency) when it hit the market. This increased to $9,980 ($48,524) in 1975. For comparison, a base-model Corvette cost just $6,810 ($33,111) in 1975.

The reason for the price increase was that one-third of the body panels produced were wasted because of difficulty getting the acrylic layer to bond with the fiberglass. Furthermore, hunting season caused a large portion of the workforce to go hunting, resulting in a seriously understaffed factory.

Production ceased in 1975, but several 1976 models were constructed out of remaining parts. In total, 2,906 SV-1s were produced: 772 1974s, 2,100 1975s, and 34 1976s.

Motorcycle Data

The Motorcycle database was launched in May 2016, with 43 fields (columns) found on common bike models. After first release additional data fields were included in the August 2016 update, having 62 columns.

The next version was released in September 2016 with 71 columns.

Source of specification data

The European database development started in 2003, sourcing data from various sources and manually typing into a proprietary Excel spreadsheet, creating an original product.

Primarily sourced from historical manufacturers’ publications, open source data, DVLA, NMVTIS and personal knowledge.

Mid-year updates were possible sourcing data from Wikipedia, and other online sources.

The original database: initially it included only data that I was personally interested, engine and performance data. In a period of 2005-2006 I was deciding when to make a new row by checking performance data, which have sometimes variations from year to year despite that engine is the same, thus causing some duplicates in engine data. Additional data is collected from various sources and published under creative commons licence, royality and royality free licencing with contributors from all over the world.

Accuracy notes

Many sources have errors, but the author having high experience in cars and data analysis, spotted numerous mistakes and input correct data where possible.

The most important data, such as engine and dimensions, are 99.99% accurate. Less accurate data are the following: performance data, where are often variations such as +/- 0.1 liters in fuel consumption, suspension type and occasionally tire size.

No database is perfect, 100% accuracy is impossible … but GAUK believe that our manually, hand-made vehicle database is the most accurate, comprehensive database ever have existed

Why tires only for electric vehicles? The main reasons are these :

1) Electric vehicles are, in most cases, heavier than their gasoline counterparts. This requires the tire to have a higher load capacity, which may affect the vehicle's handling, especially during sporty driving on twisty roads.

2) Electric vehicles are often capable of superior performance with surprising acceleration, which puts some strain on the tire casing. Some drivers have even complained that their wheels quickly become unbalanced.

That's when engineers in the field realized that the rapidly deployed torque of the electric motors could cause the rim to slip slightly on the tire, causing an imbalance over time. This is serious stuff!

3) Since there is no mechanical noise under the hood of an electric vehicle, EV tire manufacturers must come up with quieter products.

Already available from the factory on special vehicles like the Porsche Taycan, the P Zero Elect is now available for many other brands including Tesla.

Bridgestone Ecopia
This tire was not necessarily developed for electric cars, but it was developed to offer the least possible resistance to rolling friction.

Hankook Kinergy Eco EV
This is another tire that is intended for EVs mainly because it doesn't have much frictional resistance and delivers a quiet ride.

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo
Here's a South Korean product that should be considered if we rely on the excellent quality of the brand's other products. Its main characteristic? Like the Eco EV, it is very quiet!

This tire is designed for high-performance electric vehicles, and thus for the likes of the Porsche Taycan.

Michelin Primacy Energy
The tire that equips the Tesla factory is also a tire with less resistance but eventually, Michelin should present us with an EV tire to compete with the one recently launched by Goodyear.

Michelin Pilot Sport EV
Another tire intended for high-performance vehicles, this Michelin product is not designed specifically for EVs, but rather is pitched as being “EV-compatible”.

👉 Visit manufacturers' and dealers' websites to see what vehicles are available on the market, how much they cost and what deals are available. For example, manufacturers often offer discounts on certain models, and they allow you to do financing calculations with different terms and rates offered, both for purchase and for leasing. This is very useful because you know where you stand financially before you even walk through the dealer's door. It also helps you keep your cool!

For used car values, two references are helpful.

👉 Le Guide Hebdo: This guide gives you the trade-in value when buying or selling vehicles, for free and in a few clicks. The Quebec government uses it to determine the sales tax (the QST) on used cars.

👉 The Canadian Black Book : This guide allows dealers to evaluate the price of a trade-in vehicle and obtain the future value of all models sold in the country.

Criteria to consider ...

In order to find the vehicle that suits you best, you need to take into account several criteria: your budget and your intended use are undoubtedly the first points to consider; then there are the warranties, the car loan, manufacturer offers, model availability, reliability, safety, interesting opportunities (my colleague is selling his car...), etc.

Car Loan

If you're in the market for a new vehicle, once you've finished thinking about it, it's time to make an appointment with a reputable dealership to begin the financing and purchase process. You won't be able to take advantage of the low rates offered by manufacturers unless your credit is impeccable.

2nd Chance Credit: If your credit record is damaged and you are denied regular credit car financing, you should know that some dealerships specialize in 2nd chance credit while offering new and guaranteed vehicles. Don't be embarrassed, your situation is very common.

A friend sells you his car? This is advantageous because you will know the true history of the vehicle (such as the reason for the sale, maintenance history, etc.) and you will save the seller's commission in addition to the GST. However, you will have to get a personal loan or use your savings to finance your purchase.

Time flies, and we're once again at the time of year when it's time to think about preparing your vehicle(s) for the winter ahead. And part of this ritual is thinking about winter tires.

Given the ever-increasing prices of new cars and SUVs, many owners are choosing to keep their vehicle a little longer than they might have originally planned. For some, this means buying new, more efficient winter tires.

Remember that in some Canadian regions, including Quebec and parts of British Columbia (especially the faster roads), the use of appropriate winter tires is mandatory.

Even elsewhere in the country, many vehicle owners choose to stack the safety odds in their favour by foresaking summer or all-season tires in favour of winter tires (or “cold weather tires”, as one British Columbia-based manufacturer once called them).

Very few new products this year
Given the economic slowdown of the last two years, very few manufacturers have been keen to introduce new products for the coming season.

As a result, there are only a few updated tire models on the market.

Notably, there's a change at Nordman; the Finnish brand has become an independent brand (while remaining part of the Nokian fold). Nordman is launching the Nordman North 9 for cars and vans, a tire that closely resembles the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 with a few alterations to the tread pattern.

We also welcome the latest addition to Canadian Tire's Edge range, which offers a winter version of its tires, but with the distinctive Hankook logo. Hankook manufactures this new winter tire that was featured in Auto123.com late last winter.

You may recall as well that American tire giant Goodyear is now owner of the legendary American Cooper brand. So we should be seeing some news on that front in the coming months.

A few tips
You should know that it will be a little easier to get what you're looking for this year, since last year's supply-chain issues have, we were told by retailers and manufacturers, been largely been resolved.

However, if your mechanic advises you to change your worn winter tires, if you yourself feel that it's time to put new tires on your vehicle, or if you own a new vehicle that will need winter tires, don't delay too long. The most affordable products (or the most popular, such as those in sizes 205 or 215/55 R16) are likely to go fast. You may find that you only have the more expensive top-of-the-range tires at your disposal!

The trends
While the true, dedicated winter tire remains the preferred choice, electric-vehicle owners are increasingly looking at whether tire manufacturers are going to introduce EV-specific winter tires.

In truth, it's better for EV owners to choose high-quality winter tires, for a few reasons:

Winter-approved all-season tires
Meanwhile, the very recent technology of so-called “homologated” or winter-certified tires, those that can remain on the vehicle all year round, continues to win motorists over, especially those who don't use their vehicles much in winter, or only when the roads are completely clear, or to travel south in at the onset of Canadian winter.

As the technology develops, we’re finding that most of this corner of the market is dominated by two products offered by two major manufacturers: the Nokian WR-G4 and Michelin Cross-Climate2. These products often make the headlines in European trade magazines, and generally take turns snagging best-tire awards over there. We are currently testing both of these tires.

A third tire with the same technology is now among us, and is also undergoing long-term testing by Auto123. That would be the recently updated Hankook 4S2 (750).

Studded tires
For some motorists, the choice of a studded tire for added peace of mind is a no-brainer. However, there are some disadvantages to choosing such a tire, the first being that studs are generally not available with high-end tires except for Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Michelin X-Ice North and Continental XTRM, the studs of which are factory-fitted (and even glued in the case of Continental, whose prototypes were designed and created in Quebec). For most other studded tires, you'll have to fall back on intermediate or mid-range tires.

As well, know that this type of tire is generally noisy, and that it’s not allowed in most underground parking lots. Plus, on dry pavement, it will lose some grip, since part of the tread is “covered” with metal parts (which should wear along with the rubber). Tires of this type cannot be kept on your vehicle in summer, of course.

Yesterday we presented a summary of the current state of affairs in the field, and the choices vehicle owners have to make when deciding on a new set of rubber. Today, our choices for best winter tires for cars and small SUVs. Tomorrow, winter tires for larger SUVs and pickups!

Here then are our picks for the best tires we have tested out (all fitted to press vehicles of various segments).

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 and R5

For a number of years now, Nokian tires from Finland have been at the top of the class. We've seen the gradual development of the Hakkapeliitta range, now in its tenth generation. Once again this winter, they are available in studded (factory) versions.

In addition, the Finnish manufacturer has recently created a completely studless version of its winter tires, the R3 which has become the R5. Tested on several new vehicles, these Nokian tires proved superior to almost all other brands in terms of grip and ride quietness. Some buyers may balk at the higher cost of these tires, but over time, they prove to be extremely durable.

Among the “homologated” tires (certified for year-round use) is the Nokian WR-G4, which we are currently testing with the help of a Mercedes-Benz C300. It delivers an impressively quiet ride and proved effective on lightly snow-covered roads in terms of grip, handling and braking. It also provides good control on icy or wet pavements.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 and LM

Here's a tire that needs no introduction. Its formula has been with us for years, and over time Bridgestone has improved its durability. The Blizzak WS90 is suitable for the majority of cars, SUVs and MPVs, but there are also variants including the LM001 and 005 for deeper snow, the LM32 with wider tread for luxury vehicles and the DM-V2 for larger SUVs (more on that tomorrow).

In all cases, they have proved highly effective in all conditions, and exceptionally quiet on the road.

Michelin X-Ice Snow and North

Introduced to the market a few years ago, the Michelin X-Ice Snow and X-Ice North tires have now succeeded in making us forget the old X-Ice tires, which lacked grip in the snow.

In my case, I've often driven vehicles with Michelin X-Ice Snow both on my own car and on press cars. It's definitely a big improvement over the old X-Ice. If, like many motorists, you have a great deal of confidence in Michelin, you can be at ease choosing these; they should satisfy you.

As for the North tire, only my aversion to studded tires will prevent me from recommending it unless you're going to be driving regularly in heavily snow-covered or often icy regions.

Otherwise, for those who prefer an all-year-certified tire, we're testing the Michelin Cross-Climate2. Like the Nokian WR-G4, it delivers a quiet ride, is efficient and grippy on lightly snow-covered roads, and provides good control on icy or wet pavement.

Continental Viking 7 and XTRM

Once again, these tires are highly recommendable, if only for their grip in snow and on icy roads. My personal experience is based on it use with a 2017 Ford Escape of my own. The XTRMs fitted to this smaller SUV in winter have proved to be stable and efficient in all winter conditions.

What's more, this will be the fourth season they've equipped the Escape, and they've hardly shown any noticeable wear.

The studded version was developed in collaboration with Montreal's Pneus Touchette, and the German engineers took their expert advice seriously. Note that, in this case, the studs aren't just factory-fitted to the XTRMs - they're glued on!

Pirelli Sottozero III

If you own a performance car that you'd like to drive in winter, look to Pirelli's Italian products, specifically the Sottozero range. There are some models in that product range specifically designed for certain types of sportier and more muscular cars.

I tried several, and often in extreme conditions. Last winter, for example, during a heavy snowstorm, I drove a Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG equipped with (very) wide Sottozero IIIs as a test car. At one point, I drove a stretch of highway that had not yet been cleared of snow. Despite the width of the tires, they proved very effective, even if I could feel some resistance in the steering wheel.

Importantly, at a reasonable speed (for driving in a snowstorm!), I never felt less then secure. On another occasion, I had occasion to drive a Mustang GT in the middle of winter. Thes performance coupe was shod with Sottozero tires that proved very effective in both snow and ice. Highly recommendable.

Motomaster Winter Edge II… by Hankook!

Lest you think I only drive – and recommend - expensive tires, know that I’ve been able to try out several other more “affordable” winter tires. And among them, there's one I tested when it was brand new on the market. In fact, this tire was one of the few new products to be introduced last winter.

That would be the Motomaster Winter Edge II. Indeed, it's a tire offered by one of the country's leading tire retailers, Canadian Tire.

This Motomaster tire was designed and tested by South Korean giant Hankook, and Motomaster wants it to be considered a “Tier 1” tire, in the same general category as the Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak products.

The Winter Edge II is available in 46 sizes for 14- to 20-inch rims on cars, SUVs and crossovers, with speed ratings of T (190 km/h or 118 m/h maximum sustained speed) and H (210 km/h or 130 m/h maximum sustained speed), which should suit some 70 percent of winter vehicles in Canada.

The tread pattern has been designed to meet the needs of our winters. I did several laps at ICAR, driving a Toyota RAV4 and a Corolla (you can see who this product is for!) in snow, on ice and even on wet pavement. And I have to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. Even with all the driving aids switched off, I was able to maintain good control of the vehicle in those conditions.

Incidentally, it will not be marketed with studs. What's more, Motomaster has just announced a version for tougher vans, the Edge II HD. Hankook also has its own winter products, such as the I-Cept and I-Pike.

Discount brands

Of course, there will always be discount brands, many of them Chinese brands. In the case of the latter, for the moment I've only tried a set of Sailuns, and over time this manufacturer (which now has official offices in Canada) is adopting newer technologies that should gradually prove their worth.

According to some of our sources, there are small-brand winter tires that are getting good marks from their owners. This is the case for Asian brands Minerva (studdable) and Radial GT (whose North American factory is producing more and more tires). Except for limited travel, these tires can be good fit for motorists who don’t rack up tons of winter miles thanks to their affordable price.

By and large, the fact remains that we still recommend sticking with the big, well-known brands.

Lastly, three points to remember as winter approaches:

1) Beware of brands with strange names that have just appeared. Better to wait and let them prove themselves.

2) Remember that a winter tire is a compromise. Some models can be very effective on certain makes and models of car. Others...less so. But no matter what, if you go with a recommended quality tire, chances are you'll be satisfied.

3) As I like to repeat, remember that when you're in a vehicle (of any size), your life and that of your passengers rests on four points of contact, each barely larger than the palm of your hand! Keep that in mind when at 110 km/h!

Best winter tires for big SUVs, pickups in Canada 2023-2024 | Guide

Before we get into the thick of it, some relevant information about winter tires for SUVs and pickups:

It's no secret that cars have long since given up market leadership to SUVs and light-duty trucks, notably pickups. In the past, pickup trucks came by default with tires that were as sturdy as they were inelegant. They also tended not to offer outstanding performance – mainly because pickups of the time weren’t made to offer that performance. Suffice to say, that’s changed!

We should mention that pickup trucks here generally get their own types of tires, whereas SUVs and crossovers often run on tires similar to automobile tires – just bigger. In this case, it's worth noting that most of the tires discussed in our car tire buying guide can also be used on these vehicles.

Meanwhile, an increasing number of manufacturers are offering pickup trucks equipped with more robust tires for off-road excursions (even if few owners will ever venture that far off the pavement...). As you'll have gathered, we're talking about models like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Gladiator Moab, Chevrolet Colorado Bison, Ford F-150 Tremor and Transit Trail, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4 and others fitted at the factory with aggressively designed tires for off-road use.

If you own such a vehicle and it has such tires, it's a good idea to have them inspected by a tire specialist to check that they are suitable for winter use.

(Remember, in some parts of the country, only tires bearing the emblematic winter logo depicting a mountain silhouette with a snowflake in the centre are permitted in winter).

It's also worth repeating that genuine winter tires offer better grip on snow and icy roads than off-road tires.

Incidentally, if your truck is an F-250 or 2500 (Econoline pickup or van), you'll need to look into the more robust LT (light truck) tires (which perform a little less well).

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 and Outpost

As is the case for cars and lighter vehicles, Nokian tires are, in our opinion, at the top of the list of the best winter tires. We recommend the new-generation Hakkapeliitta R5, which replaces the highly efficient R3 and is superior to the old Rotiiva line for winter use.

However, if you're looking for a tire with a more aggressive tread pattern, consider the Nokian Outpost. This tire was originally produced in Russia but, given certain recent events, they are now made in Tennessee and now carry the Outpost nAT designation. I've had them on my Jeep TJ for some time now and can confirm that they're just as effective on cold or wet pavement, in off-road situations and especially in deep snow, which is what many 4x4 users are looking for. They're also competitively priced. The Outpost is also an tire certified for use in all seasons, including winter.

Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV and BFGoodrich T/A KO2

In the tests we carried out, Michelin's X-Ice Snow winter tire proved to be very effective in winter (much better than the old X-Ice 3). I tried them on my Lincoln MKZ and was very satisfied. They are now available in SUV, crossover and light-duty truck versions.

This SUV version of Michelin’s tire uses the same rubber, pattern and design as the X-Ice Snow for cars, the main difference being that the “body” of the tire has been strengthened to adapt it to the higher weight of the vehicle. Certainly recommendable.

Did you know that BFGoodrich is part of the Michelin Group? This manufacturer (of American origin) offers pickup truck owners its T/A KO2 tires, available in certified winter and summer versions. Reasonably priced, they're also very popular. They're even very capable in off-road situations!

Goodyear and Cooper

American manufacturer Goodyear has become a specialist in the production of light-duty truck (and larger truck) tires of all calibers, and offers several interesting products tailored to different uses. For example, off-road enthusiasts should take a look at the Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar tires, which are approved for all four seasons. I've been using these tires on my personal Jeep for several years, with great satisfaction. They're also relatively quiet.

If you prefer to fit your SUV with real winter tires, we can recommend the Goodyear Wintercommand Ultra, a studless winter tire that performs very well on icy roads.

For more rugged vehicles (especially commercial ones), Goodyear offers the Wrangler DuraTrac with very aggressive tread for mud and snow. It's even available with studs for icy roads.

Goodyear only recently completed its purchase of American manufacturer Cooper, enabling it to market second-tier-quality tires at a good price. Goodyear engineers are currently working on a major improvement in the construction of Cooper tires, but we'll have to wait a little longer before seeing the full results. Note that some Cooper models have already been relaunched with improvements.

At present, the Cooper Discoverer Snow Claw winter tire could be a good choice, especially as it is available with studs.

Bridgestone Blizzak LT and W695 and Firestone Winterforce LT

It's easy for us to recommend the LT versions of Bridgestone's Blizzaks (SUVs, crossovers and light pickups can be fitted with the appropriate Blizzak WS90s). These are excellent winter tires, especially on icy roads. The W695 version is mainly intended for commercial vans.

Bridgestone also markets a second-tier tire, the Firestone Winterforce, available in LT or studded versions.

Pirelli

Of course, we can’t forget Italian manufacturer Pirelli. Its most popular winter tire remains the Scorpion Ice & Snow (I had a set of these on my own Jeep for a few years and they proved very effective, especially on icy roads), but you'll have to pay extra. It's a top-of-the-range tire with a main characteristic is that it's quiet.

Several other brands

If you take a look at our guides from previous years, you'll see that several brands and models have been renewed for 2024. I was able to draw some interesting conclusions from driving on tires such as the Toyo Observe GSi-6 in LT version or Open Country including the WLT or A/T III, but the latter are more intended for off-road excursions or deep snow. Think again if you're looking for more of a general-use tire!

Yokohama Geolandar tires have also been the subject of longer-term testing, including the A/T G015 version, but again, be aware that this type of tire is also a winter/summer approved off-road tire. This may not be what you're looking for if you do a lot of driving. However, if you live in a snowier northern region, this would be a good choice to consider.

Many other brands offer tires for vans. These include Hankook with its Dynapro I*cept, I*Pike RW11 and, above all, the studless RW10 Winter I*cept X designed for icy roads. And let's not forget Lauffen with its I FIT Ice (this product is a second-rate tire, a by-product of South Korean manufacturer Hankook). Another tire from the same source, the Kumho Road Venture AT52, is also available.

In a more affordable niche, a lot of the feedback tells us that GT Radial is becoming increasingly popular with its Adventurer AT-AW (manufactured in various parts of the world, including South Carolina).

Other lesser-known products are out there, among them the Falken Rubitrek AT Wildpeak, General Altimax Grabber AT-2, Nexen Grappler and the recently launched Roadian HTX2. Again, their lack of fame doesn't mean they aren't good quality (Falken is owned by Japanese giant Sumitomo, but some products are made in the U.S., while General is the second-tier brand of German Continental; Nexen originates from South Korea).

Note that many of these tires are intended for off-road excursions, and that they are often of the homologated variety (thus certified for use in all seasons).

Finally, the new Motomaster Edge II winter tire (produced by Hankook for Canadian Tire dealers) should be available in an HD version for light trucks.

Lastly, once again, you need to be careful with lesser-known brands or those that have just arrived from Asian countries, but which have not yet proved their worth. Moreover, their prices are often close to those of tires of recognized quality. They're not necessarily a bargain!

The final word
Most of our short-term and long-term tests were carried out with tires from major brands. Finding the “ideal” winter tire is mostly a matter of collecting the right information. Not that you should just walk into a dealer's shop and ask for “the best winter tires at the best price”, because there’s no one answer to that. Each product has its own qualities and imposes its own “compromises”.

If you haven't made your choice yet, don't hesitate to ask the tire technician questions. Chances are, with a little experience, they’ll have built up a wealth of knowledge through the experiences shared by his customers. They'll know how to answer your questions...

Of course, the more desirable the models, the less attractive the offers. Manufacturers also offer attractive rates on their certified pre-owned vehicles.

Over the past few years, if you follow the tire sector, you might have thought that the major tire manufacturers had stopped innovating. Few new tires were hitting the market. But that was just a false impression.

Major changes are afoot in this field, and while some are linked to the arrival of electric vehicles, others are the result of climatic and even demographic change.

As mentioned, few new conventional summer tires have been introduced in recent months. But there has been a jump in tires of another category.

Winter-approved all-season tires in the spotlight for 2024
Tire manufacturers are finally producing tires that perform as well in winter as they do in summer. These are generally referred to as “all-weather” or winter-approved all-season tires.

The different names take different routes to describe, in essence, tires that are recognized as much for their capabilities on dry pavement in good weather conditions as on wet, snowy or icy pavement, including very cold temperatures.

This is made possible by a variety of techniques, including more advanced tread compounds that remain soft in cold weather, but don't wear out faster on dry pavement.

What's more, Canadian winters are becoming less harsh, with fewer snowfalls and big cold spells than in the past. This will encourage many motorists, especially older ones, to opt for year-round tires, especially if they don't cover as much mileage as in the past. If they can save themselves two tire changes a year and the cost of an expensive set of tires, so much the better.

The trend towards all-weather tires seems to be well underway. That's the opinion of Guy Hardiman, one of the tire marketing managers at Canadian Tire, who sees a trend in favor of this type of tire in the future.

In fact, some automakers have begun delivering new cars fitted with these tires. Ford recently unveiled the sportier Rally version of its all-electric Mustang Mach-e, which it equips out of the factory with Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires, one of the best examples of what an "approved" tire can be.

In 2024, the most recommended products are more or less the same as in previous years. We reiterate, however, that while perfect for summer, these tires may not perform as well in deep snow. Highly recommendable in urban conditions, they are less so in mountainous regions during winter.

That said, the many tests we carried out on them proved interesting.

Michelin Cross Climate 2

Possibly the best of the group. Tested on a 2012 Lincoln MKZ, this will be its third summer of use when the car is mainly used for long distances. There wasn't enough snow this winter to discuss it here. But in summer, when it rains, we've noticed exceptional grip. Above all, they're quiet.

Nokian WRG4/WRG5 or Nordman Solstice 4

We tested the WRG4 version of this tire on a 2010 Mercedes-Benz C300, and came to the same conclusions as with the Michelin tires. Again, in summer, they're very quiet and stable. Note that many European car magazines compare Nokian WRG4s head-to-head with the Michelin tire, and their results are almost equivalent.

Nokian has just announced the eventual arrival of the Remedy WRG5 range, specifically adapted to North American needs. This is an elaborate version of the WRG4.

Since the WRG4 will eventually give way to the WRG5, the manufacturer will not be eliminating it. On the contrary, it will be renamed Solstice 4 for its Nordman intermediate range. Depending on your budget, here's what you might want to experience on your vehicle!

Bridgestone Weather Peak

Launched last year, the Weather Peak is Japanese giant Bridgestone's answer to the Michelin and Nokian entries in the all-weather tire segment. It promises the same results as the latter, but since it's so new, driving impressions are not yet widely known. Nevertheless, it's a safe bet that this tire will perform as well as the first two mentioned.

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady

Another recently built tire, Goodyear's WeatherReady is part of the manufacturer's renowned Assurance family. Once again, this is a more elaborate all-conditions tire. In addition to its winter acronym, it features a tread pattern that is very well designed to evacuate water, making it a great candidate for use during the summer season.

Hankook Kinergy 4S2

Here's a surprise: Hankook's Kinergy 4S2 tire has been on the market for a few years now, and it seems to have slipped under the radar. Last year, the manufacturer supplied us with four of them, which were fitted to a 2010 Suzuki SX4.

With a tread pattern similar to that of Michelin Cross-Climate 2s, they proved to be very effective during the winter (even if snow was not as abundant as in the past in my corner of Quebec). Above all, on dry pavement, it proved even quieter than anticipated; it's also very solid on wet pavement. Highly recommendable and well-priced. This tire is available in some forty sizes.

This section of our summer and all-season tire feature is dedicated to products for larger SUVs and light-duty trucks. Keep in mind of course that the majority of models in those categories share the same or nearly the same platform as smaller vehicles made by the same brand. Many of the products mentioned in our guide for cars and small SUVs are available in sizes suitable for larger vehicles.

The current trend...
That said, in recent years, most automakers producing pickup trucks and SUVs have begun to offer more rugged-looking versions of their vehicles. While not really all-terrain vehicles as such, those variants, from the smallest to the largest, are offered with more aggressive, rugged-looking tires.

You'll have gathered that we're talking about small SUVs like the Bronco Sport, as well as true off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Land Rover Defender. Some will most likely never see mud or demanding trails, but no matter - if they’re going to look the part, they need the right rubber.

In any case, owners of those off-road focused vehicles will eventually have to change their tires; and some will even go so far as to opt for less aggressive and, above all, less noisy tires! So read on.

We also touch on tires for heavy-duty truck variants such as the Ford Raptor and Chevrolet ZR2 lines, which are more regularly used for truly demanding excursions.

Off-road tire manufacturers are numerous and offer a wide range of products. Before making a choice, do your homework and take the time to study what's on offer.

As far as I'm concerned, my advice is to opt for a product from a well-known brand. Of course, you have a budget to respect (and personal tastes guiding you), but be aware that the bargains offered by unknown brands may disappoint you in the long run.

Incidentally, many of these aggressively treaded tires display the little winter logo of the mountain silhouette with the snowflake at its centre. This means that the tire can be used legally in winter. But it might not be as capable as expected, especially if the tire is clearly too wide.

Remember, too, that excessive widths that cause the tire to protrude from the fenders can get you into trouble with the police!

BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2

First and foremost: BF Goodrich (part of the Michelin family) needs no introduction, even as it faces new challengers due to increasing competition. The KO2 is even offered as original equipment on certain models. It stands out for its competence and durability, and is a smart choice for winter driving too.

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

Like BF Goodrich's K02, the Wrangler Duratrac is a well-recognized product that is generally highly appreciated by its users. Goodyear is a trustworthy brand, and its Duratrac, also installed as original equipment on certain models by some vehicle manufacturers, has already proved its worth on off-road excursions.

Its sidewall tread pattern makes it a wise choice for demanding touring enthusiasts. If you do a lot of highway driving, the Wrangler SR-A model would be more recommendable.

Yokohama Geolandar G017

The G017 is one of Yokohama's newest products on the market. It doesn't replace the excellent G015 (which we've already covered here after a mid-term test), but in off-road situations, especially for the more robust SUVs and trucks, it should prove even more effective.

For those really serious about off-road excursions, take a look at the W/T G003, while for highway use, it's probably best to check out the new, “all-conditions” (winter-approved) G056 tire.

Nokian Outpost nAT

Still fitted on one of my vehicles, a Jeep TJ, the Outpost has so far proved very capable in both winter and summer. When it was launched a few years ago, it was manufactured in Russia. But today, the tire is produced at the Finnish manufacturer's Tennessee plant (you’ll now find the nAT letters on its sidewalls as an identifier).

This tire might not be available everywhere, especially in big-box stores, but most distributors and dealers can easily find it for you.

Toyo Open Country

This excellent Japanese product needs no introduction. It can even be found as original equipment on some new vehicle models.

Its latest AT 3 version comes with one of three tread designs, depending on the degree of grip you're looking for. This newest model is less noisy on dry pavement than previous generations.

Falken Wild Peak A/T

Over time, Japanese manufacturer Falken (part of the Sumitomo Group of companies) has carved out an enviable place for itself in the off-road or aggressive tire segment. The tire is now included as original equipment on some smaller SUVs coming out of the factory, and it might be the tire you're looking for if your truck or SUV is on the smaller side.

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo

Bridgestone is another of those major tire makers that enjoys an excellent reputation. Its Dueler A/T Revo may look a little less aggressive than the competition, but the tire is highly efficient and, above all, quiet on the road.

Note that Bridgestone owns the American brand Firestone, whose Destination M /T 2 is more aggressive and noisier, but ideal for larger pickups.

Continental Terrain Contact

German brand Continental is often overlooked when it comes to truck tires, but its Terrain Contact model is well worth considering. Incidentally, General Tire Grabber light truck tires are also part of Continental's product offering, with models ranging from aggressive tires like the A/TX to quieter ones like the HYTS.

On the other hand, size isn’t everything. In order to choose the right tire, it is important to determine the use that will be made of your vehicle. Is it mainly a passenger vehicle? A work truck or van? Or a SUV or pickup to be used for off-roading?

By the way, one of the first misconceptions that many pickup truck or SUV owners have is that these vehicles need to have huge, wide tires so that they have better traction in the snow or on ice. This is completely false! The narrowness of the tread is an asset in snow and ice. However, this narrowness reduces some of the vehicle's lateral stability on dry pavement. This is just one the many ways that a winter tire is a compromise choice. You gain in some areas and sacrifice in others. And this holds true, regardless of the type of vehicle you drive.

As we mentioned in the first part of our buying guide, there have been no major new tire unveilings for the winter of 2021-2022 in any segment, except for the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10, which is available in countless sizes and dimensions for passenger vans. (Nokian also offers the R3 version, which is a studless tire that can compete effectively with studded tires.)

Nokian

In addition to the "Hakka 10" (also available in an SUV version), we should mention the LT3 winter tires for pickups and heavy-duty vans with 20-inch wheels. In this case, these LT3s (studded or unstudded) can take a single load of up to 3,700 lbs.

For larger, more rugged SUVs, Nokian offers the Rotiiva A/T. Nokian also offers winter tires designed specifically for delivery vans: the Hakkapeliitta C3 (studded) and CR3 (studless). This is a great idea as the Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter become ever more widespread on our roads.

The last Buick Grand National ever built going to auction | Guide

Of all American cars made in the 1980s, one of the most popular today is without a doubt the Buick Grand National. Described by many as the last true American muscle car (aside from Dodge’s output for the past 15 years), this car represents an era, but more than that, it evokes a nostalgia for a period that we won't see again.

That's why the model keeps increasing in value on the market. This performance version of Buick’s Regal was fitted with a 3.8L turbocharged V6 engine, good for 245 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, very respectable figures for the time. Having driven one, I can confirm that when the turbo kicks in, it's time to tie down your bonnet.

That’s even more so considering the Grand National wasn’t exactly world-class when it came to handling. Yes, it was better than the muscle cars of the ‘60s in that regard, but it could still be a challenge. The power that the Grand National version deployed made things interesting, to say the least. A 4-speed automatic transmission handled the horses and, of course, sent their muscle power to the rear wheels.

1987 was the last year of production for the Grand National, and it was also the year in which Buick built the most of them, about 20,000. That's why, in most cases, if you see a Grand National on the market, chances are it’s an ‘87. But there’s something very special about the model that will be offered at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, from January 22 to 30. It is the last one that was assembled, on December 11, 1987.

The car has been kept in a climate-controlled environment and has only been released for special appearances, such as the 2003 Buick Centennial celebration in Flint, Michigan. It also appeared in the 2012 Grand National documentary "Black Air." Today, it has only 33 miles on it, according to the auctioneer.

How much will it go for? That's a bit hard to predict given the very low mileage. In the past year, Grand Nationals with a few thousand miles have sold for between $50,000 and $65,000 USD. You’ll have to budget a little more for this model if you’re thinking of going for it.

Take note, this Grand National is not to be confused with the rarer, more powerful GNX versions, which are currently selling for around $200,000.

BFGoodrich T/A K02 four-seasons tires review, part 1 | Guide

In the spring of 2020, after only a few weeks of confinement, I purchased a 2007 Subaru Legacy GT SpecB to quench my thirst for the brand’s unique type of performance capabilities. Let’s be honest, the spiciest version of the midsize sedan from that generation is not - and never has been - a powerhouse, but compared to my more daily-use commuter, a Volkswagen Jetta City, this four-wheel drive sedan had (much) more potential.

After more than a year of ownership, this rather rare version of the Legacy still finds a way to put a smile on my face, not so much for its mind-boggling performance, but more for its overall efficiency. I drive approximately a hundred vehicles a year - some of them pushing the limits of physics - but every time I get behind the wheel of this old Subaru - with over 200,000 km on it, by the way - I appreciate its mechanical, more archaic feel.

Specifically, I love the sound of this boxer engine, the whistling of the turbocharger and its blow-off valve, the slightly less restrictive exhausts and these high-performance brakes added along the way, and this clear impression of driving an object that I control, an imperfect object that vibrates, that roars, that forces me to remain vigilant behind the wheel.

A new project
A little over a year after the Subaru purchase, I came across an ad for a 2004 Ford Ranger XLT, a single cab long box (seven feet) version equipped with a manual transmission, four wheel drive and the "big" 4.0L V6. After doing some research, I realizes that this trim is quite rare on the market. In fact, examples of the compact truck still in good condition are quite hard to find. Ford discontinued this generation of the Ranger in 2011 and many owners of the little pickup don't hesitate to use it daily for work.

I couldn't pass up such an opportunity, so I added this old pickup to my modest fleet.

The Ranger had new off-road tires, but they were oversized, which was far from ideal, even if the only time that got annoying was at low speeds, with the tires rubbing in the front when the wheels were cramped. Like I said, it wasn’t a huge issue, but I wanted to give the truck correctly sized tires. And so I, first passing on its tires to another truck lover via an online ad.

And why not four-season tires?
Given the limited use I was going to make of this truck, I decided it was a good idea to equip my new toy with four-season tires approved for winter use, namely to avoid changing tires twice a year.

As it happens, except for a few tests of four-season tires in winter over the years, this set of four-season tires was the first one that I’d be installing on one of my personal vehicles. I I have always been in favour of winter tires, even before the Quebec government forced motorists in La Belle Province to buy winter tires for the cold season.

But a scofflaw I am not. The presence of a snowflake on the sidewall of the all-season tire would allow me to drive with these soles during the cold season.

The mighty BFGoodrich T/A K02
I turned to BFGoodrich to see if a set of winter-homologated all-season tires was as good as (or reasonably close to) an authentic winter tire when the snow and slush and ice hit. The line of off-road tires it produces really doesn't need much introduction; BFGoodrich is known for its motorsport presences, including the famous Baja 500 event that features some of the toughest cars and trucks on the globe.

The BFGoodrich T/A K02 may not be as aggressive a tire as the lineup designed for such arduous driving in the Mexican desert, but it's meant to be capable of withstanding the treatments of an off-road course - at reasonable speeds - but also through the daily grind, around town, at the cottage - just about everywhere!

Introduced in 2013, the K02 is not the newest tire on the market. And yet, its reputation piqued my curiosity. At the time of its introduction, the tire’s sidewalls were 20 percent more resistant, with a tread 20 percent more resistant on asphalt. On the other hand, on gravel, it was twice as strong as the previous model. Traction was also improved by 10 percent in mud and 19 percent in snow.

On dry surfaces
Since I bought it, my new-old Ranger did unfortunately spent a few weeks in the garage - the supply of parts has been more complicated since the beginning of this pandemic. Fortunately, I was able to drive my old pickup with its new tires. Not only are they less imposing in the truck's wheel arches, but they also prove to be very quiet, despite their aggressive design.

I’ll admit it, the Ford Ranger isn't exactly the definition of a modern, comfortable and quiet vehicle. The older generation of the pickup has more in common with a tractor... and that's mostly what attracts me to this project!

Every time I get behind the wheel, I find a noisy, bouncy (when the box is empty) and poorly soundproofed vehicle. But I can at least congratulate myself for choosing these tires, as their quiet ride is really what struck me the first few kilometers, while the grip is not bad for a Ford Ranger. I'm looking forward to the return of warm weather though, as I didn't get to try these tires on warm asphalt.

And in winter?
For now (and the upcoming weeks), the interesting part is to see if these four-season tires are as good as BFGoodrich claims. I'll be paying close attention to the performance of these K02s when the snow, ice and everything winter has to offer when it settles in for good... and it should be soon!

It's hard not to fall for the many offers and subsidies on electric vehicles these days. But is it worth it?

The price of fuel at the pump has a direct impact on the demand for electric cars. As the price of gasoline rises and remains at record highs, interest in these vehicles increases. The government's electric conversion bonus also encourages this reflection and desire to switch from thermal to electric vehicles.

But it is not that simple. The price of electric cars is much higher than that of an equivalent combustion model. The difference, for the same model, between the internal combustion and electric versions is significant. In France, we are talking about 10,000€.

The question of the bonus:

Why a bonus? There is certainly a drastic desire on the part of governments to encourage drivers to switch to electric cars, but not everyone is ready or convinced of the savings they will make.

In France, a country that is a champion of incentives, several governmental aids help to absorb this price difference. The best known is the ecological bonus with a ceiling of €5,000. Only fully electric vehicles and some plug-in hybrids or hydrogen vehicles are eligible. In several regions, it is possible to benefit from additional advantages: purchase bonus, free parking, subsidies for the installation of charging stations for individuals and co-ownerships.

If you own an old gasoline vehicle registered before 2006 or diesel before 2011, you can also get a maximum conversion bonus of €5,000 depending on your income.

Not for all vehicles:

Of course, you have to keep in mind that these purchase subsidies are only valid for acquiring a less polluting vehicle. The good news is that they don't necessarily have to be new. So you can apply these incentives to new or used electric vehicles, but also to plug-in hybrids. Here are a few more details:

    Electric cars with a price less than or equal to €60,000
    Electric or rechargeable hybrid vehicles (no price limit)
    Plug-in hybrid cars with a price less than or equal to €60,000
    Thermal vehicles with CO2 emission levels below 137 g/km and priced below €50,000

Cheaper electricity:

As we know and have often heard, driving 100km with an electric car costs less than with a thermal car. But here again, everything is calculated.

Once the question of premiums is cleared up, you still have to do some calculations. The number of kilometers driven per year will have a direct impact on the logic of buying or not. If we consider only the electric car, the calculation is now easy with an average price of gasoline or diesel around 1.6 € per liter and a KW at about 0.17 €. The 100 km in thermal car will be roughly 11 € and 2,55 € for an electric car. There is no need to calculate further with these figures. But it is still possible to save on recharging.

The charging station:

It too can be subsidized. Once the installation is done, don't forget the tax credit. You can deduct part of the costs incurred for the purchase and installation of your charging station. Whether you are an owner or a tenant, you can claim the deduction by reporting the work on your income tax return.

The right time to plug in:

Last but not least, you can choose the best time to recharge your vehicle. You can plug in your car at night, when other power-hungry devices aren't normally running, or you can install a smart charging station to regulate power. If you have different needs, you can request a power increase from your utility's meter.

Here we are again! At the time of writing, many motorists are beginning to address the need for new tires for the coming winter. This need is felt even more by drivers in places like Quebec, where winter tires are mandatory as of December 1, and in British Columbia, where they are required in certain parts of the province including highways in the north and interior and especially on the Sea-to-Sky highway, as well as on some portions of Vancouver Island.

Worth knowing: Demand for tires is particularly strong this year, as many motorists have had to hold onto their vehicles for longer periods of time due to the lack of inventory at dealerships. Many will have to upgrade to new winter tires. Add to this increased consumer awareness regarding tire quality and specifications. In other words, if you need new tires, you should think about buying them early on, because the good-quality tires that are reasonably priced are of course the first to sell out.

And if you're not familiar with the tire industry, you should know that once a tire type or size is sold out, a tire dealer can NOT have new tires made, because the manufacturers have already moved on to producing next year’s summer tires!

The choice of a winter tire must be made according to the driver's needs. Tires approved for both summer and winter
The big trend in recent years is towards tires specifically designed for use in both summer AND winter use. But we’re not talking about traditional ‘all-seasons’ tires here, but rather about those “homologued” tires that have the mountain silhouette with a snowflake in the centre on the sidewall.

Not having to change your tires twice a year is appealing, but not much is known about the effectiveness of these tires. That's why Auto 123 is putting some of these tires (of the highest quality) to the test. However, it would be best to consider them only if you don't use your car much in winter, avoid driving it during heavy snowstorms and/or don't do much driving outside urban situations.

Our initial testing has shown us that these tires are quiet and very effective on wet and dry pavement. But they don't perform as well in deep snow or wet conditions.

But when you need to upgrade to heavier duty trucks, you'll need to consider heavier duty tires with some sort of load capacity, often identified by the LT designation.

By the way, the trend of choosing “homologued” tires that can be kept on for both winter and summer has been evident for some time in the light-truck niche. However, specialized products like the Michelin CrossClimate (see the car section of our guide) are also available for large SUVs (the latter under the name Agilis CrossClimate).

How Much is a Tesla?

There are common misconceptions about the price of a new Tesla, which is relatively more affordably than typically-expected: the following is the breakdown in June 2023.

Note that all pricing is accurate as of June 20, 2023 at 5:00am EST.

The effective starting price for a Tesla in June 2023 includes all premium features, Autopilot, Pearl White Multi-Coat paint, and a black 5-seat vegan leather interior as standard. All other options, including Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving, carry an additional cost.

Tesla Model 3 is Tesla’s most affordable model overall, currently.

Model 3 is a fully-electric sedan, highlighting the modern conveniences of a Tesla.

Model 3 presently comes in three configurations:

Starting price: $40,240

Starting price: $47,240

Starting price: $53,240

All configurations of Model 3 qualify for a $7,500 tax credit, bringing the effective starting price of the most affordable Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive base configuration down to $32,740. Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Model 3 Performance are brought down to $39,740 and $45,740 respectively once factoring in the tax credit.

Note that Tesla has sold-out of most existing Model 3 inventory, and a next-generation refresh is imminently expected which may affect pricing and configurations/specifications.

Tesla Model Y is built on the Model 3 platform as Tesla’s more affordable version of a fully-electric crossover/SUV.

As a result, Model Y also includes many modern Tesla amenities and features.

Model Y is currently offered in three configurations:

Starting price: $47,740

Starting price: $50,490

Starting price: $54,490

Like Model 3, Model Y fully-qualifies for the $7,500 tax credit: this brings the effective starting price of Model Y All-Wheel Drive down to $40,240 after the incentive.

As for the full breakdown, Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive costs $42,990 after the tax credit and Model Y Performance comes in at $46,990 following the incentive.

Model Y has already had its rear motor and Full Self-Driving hardware refreshed this year.

While Model S and Model X for that matter are offered as Tesla’s current most high-end, technologically-advanced models, the fact is that most Tesla buyers will purchase Tesla Model 3 or Model Y: Tesla sells a distinctive fraction of these vehicles cumulatively compared to their high-volume counterparts.

Nonetheless, Tesla Model S is offered in two configurations in June 2023:

Starting price: $88,490

Starting price: $108,490

Model S Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, previously known as Model S Long Range, offers all of Tesla’s most advanced features.

Meanwhile, Model S Plaid includes all of the same technology while adding the title of the world’s quickest production car: a 0–60 miles per hour speed of under two seconds.

Model X, Tesla’s Falcon-Winged SUV, tells a similar story:

Starting price: $98,490

Starting price: $108,490

All configurations of Model S and Model X are too expensive to qualify for a clean vehicle tax credit, making their purchase price the effective price in a majority of states.

Tesla is however offering three years of Free Supercharging on the purchase of a new Model S or Model X, as well as up to $8,500 off of new existing inventory in a bold move.

Aside from paint color and interior upgrades which can total up to $6,500 in the case of the six-seat interior on Model X, Tesla also offers autonomous feature suites in the form of Enhanced Autopilot at $6,000 or Full Self-Driving Capability at $15,000. Both feature suites, which are technically semi-autonomous, can be added after delivery via a subscription or at market price via an owner’s Tesla account.

The average cost of a Tesla is far off of the six-figures that many consumers typically anticipate: new Model S and Model X pricing can be disregarded for a majority of customers as these are Tesla’s high-end luxury models, and Model 3 and Model Y are the most popular vehicles that Tesla predominantly intends to sell by a significant margin.

Therefore, the starting price of a new Tesla sedan is $40,240, or $32,740 or less after incentives. A new Tesla crossover/SUV starts at $47,740, or $40,240 following the federal incentive and before any state incentives or fuel savings are taken into account.

Tesla plans to release increasingly more affordable vehicles and configurations over time, with the exception of Cybertruck and Roadster. Thus, we should plan for the cost-of-entry into the Tesla brand to become significantly cheaper throughout the rest of the decade— not more expensive, and certainly not over the $100,000 threshold that consumers still expect.

The first part of the year was relatively uneventful, primarily due to the pervasive impact of COVID-19 lockdowns. Like many others, I found myself confined to the comforts of home, unable to engage in much beyond essential activities. However, I managed to find solace and excitement by immersing myself in the virtual world of Forza Horizon 4, where I could experience the exhilaration of driving a simulated version of the Ferrari Daytona.

As the lockdown restrictions gradually eased and the weather improved, a newfound sense of freedom and anticipation filled the air. The moment finally arrived when I could escape the confines of home and embark on an adventure with the Daytona. With a touch of anticipation and a twist of the key, the mighty V12 engine roared to life effortlessly, as if it had been eagerly awaiting this very moment.

After that, through the summer I took the car out reasonably regularly and when the particularly poor British summer weather allowed. For the most part I eschewed the local events in favour of solo drives on a Sunday morning. I did however repeat my drive of 2020 down to the Old Mill Cafe in Wisborough green in the company of my friend Richard in his Maserati Khamsin.

As the summer arrived, I seized every opportunity to take the car out on the open road. Of course, being in the UK, the weather wasn't always on my side, but whenever the skies cleared, I made sure to indulge in the sheer pleasure of driving the Ferrari Daytona.

Instead of participating in local events, I found solace in solitary drives on peaceful Sunday mornings. There's something truly special about having the road all to yourself, with no distractions, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the driving experience. The hum of the engine, the responsive steering, and the wind rushing past created a symphony of sensations that I couldn't get enough of.

However, there was one memorable occasion where I decided to embark on a shared adventure. It all began with a charity auction on Collecting Cars, where one of the featured items was the opportunity to drive my late father's old Ferrari 250 SWB. The moment I saw this unique opportunity, I knew I had to seize it. I promptly got in touch with the organizers, expressing my interest in joining the event, and they graciously extended an invitation.

The day of the rally arrived, and as I laid eyes on my father's beloved car, emotions ran high. The Ferrari 250 SWB looked as stunning as ever, evoking cherished memories of my father's ownership. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that the car had found a new home and a new purpose, yet still retaining its remarkable beauty and legacy.

One particular detail that caught my attention was the registration plate now adorning the car - "250SWB." During my father's ownership, he had inquired with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) about the availability of this special plate. Shortly after he sold the car, he received word from the DVLA that the registration was indeed available. He passed on this information to the new owner, who, I can only imagine, secured it at a considerable cost.

Another guest speaker was Thomas Reinhold, the Heritage manager at McLaren MSO (McLaren Special Operations). Thomas, whose day job revolves around caring for legendary cars such as the McLaren F1 and Mercedes McLaren SLR, brought along the recently unveiled McLaren SLR MSO. This stunning machine left us all in awe, showcasing the cutting-edge engineering and craftsmanship that McLaren is known for.

Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the next edition of the rally and hope to be available to participate once again. The event not only provides an opportunity to indulge in our shared passion for cars but also contributes to a worthy cause. It's a gathering of like-minded individuals who appreciate the artistry, performance, and heritage of automotive engineering.

In October, it was time for the Daytona to undergo its much-needed service. Due to the delays caused by the pandemic, the service was slightly overdue. Unfortunately, my usual mechanic was unable to accommodate the service, so I decided to book it in with my friends at Pendine Works in Warwickshire. Having worked on several classic cars, including Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas, I knew that my beloved Daytona would be in capable hands at Pendine.

The journey to Pendine, spanning over 100 miles, would typically be a breeze. However, on the day I chose to make the trip, the UK faced a fuel truck driver shortage, causing immense stress and nearly forcing me to abandon the journey. Fortunately, I managed to find a petrol station that still supplied the V Power fuel required by the Daytona, saving the day.

While a basic service and oil change were the primary requirements, I also asked Pendine to address a brake judder issue at high speeds and a slight steering play. It turned out that one of the brake discs was heavily warped, prompting the decision to replace all the brake discs and pads. This introduced a delay in the service as it took time to source the correct brakes from Ferrari. The initial batch had the correct part numbers but varied in finish, necessitating their return and the supply of a new set from the same batch. It's important to note that even though manufacturers establish their own classic certification programs, much of the work and parts they provide are outsourced, resulting in potential variations in parts supply and quality.

The steering play, which may have been a consequence of encountering a pothole last year, was resolved by tightening up the steering box. Additionally, twelve new spark plugs were installed, and the distributors received attention. The final bill for the service was substantial, primarily due to the cost of parts rather than labor.

Unfortunately, due to the delays in procuring the necessary parts, I couldn't retrieve the car until early December. Winter is not the ideal season for driving the Daytona, as it is not fond of cold weather and the roads are often covered in salt. However, we managed to select a clear and dry day, albeit chilly, for the journey back home. Before stowing the car away in the dehumidified and heated garage for the winter, a thorough cleaning was necessary to remove the salt residue.

Changes are on the horizon. As mentioned in previous articles, my work commitments will likely lead to an extended multi-year relocation to the United States. Unfortunately, it is not practical for me to take the Daytona with me, so it will enter a prolonged period of storage while we are overseas. Consequently, the car will experience shorter periods of more intense use when I visit the UK. I will continue to provide updates on my drives with the Daytona as and when they occur next year. The law is designed to protect drivers who break down and was introduced in October 2008. Even drivers who carried the jackets in the boot of their car were given an on-the-spot 90 euro fine because rules state that the jackets should be stowed in the passenger compartment.

Driving abroad can be difficult enough, with motorists having to adjust to different sides of the road or foreign vehicles, let alone some strange customs.
