Jay Leno Drives the 1986 Porsche 911 BB Hybrid: The Turbo Killer Restomod

Jay Leno’s Garage welcomes a one-of-a-kind machine: a 1986 Porsche 911 Targa Hybrid, meticulously built as a modern recreation of a legendary BB tuning house classic. Jay is joined by Beau Boeckmann of Galpin Motors, who now steers BB’s North American operations, to explore the story behind this striking hybrid restomod and put it through its paces.

A Hybrid Like No Other

Unlike typical hybrids, this BB creation features an electric motor that replaces the flywheel, instantly delivering 150 horsepower alongside a custom-built 4.0-liter Ed Pink engine. This brings total output to a staggering 550hp, all routed through a robust G50 five-speed transmission. The result is instant, lag-free acceleration: power delivery rivals, and even improves upon, classic turbocharged 911s. It's a solution specifically engineered to eliminate turbo lag while preserving the unique character of an air-cooled Porsche.

Engineering and Performance Upgrades

Beyond the hybrid assist, the car boasts a suite of modern upgrades:

  • Custom Brembo brakes for confident stopping power

  • A full 997 GT3-style suspension setup for exceptional handling

  • Staggered Fuchs-style wheels built by Titan 7 to handle the added power

  • A lithium-ion battery system with regenerative braking for efficient hybrid operation

  • Distinctive Polaroid-inspired paintwork—a tribute to BB’s iconic Targa Turbo featured in the film “Car Napping”

Unique Hybrid System

BB’s hybrid system is a plug-and-play addition for mid-80s air-cooled 911s, whether based on the standard 3.2 engine or the more powerful Ed Pink 4.0-liter. Boeckmann explains that owners can either bring their own classic Porsche for the conversion or select a complete car from BB’s collection of donor vehicles. BB can produce between 7 and 10 cars a year, with each example built to order and reflecting customer preferences.

Retro Looks, Modern Tech

While the hybrid system revolutionizes performance, the build is faithful to its roots, from the iconic “whale tail” rear spoiler to the period-correct custom interior finished in blue—mirroring the legendary Polaroid Targa Turbo. The cockpit also features BB’s signature touches, including high-end electronics and, in this prototype, a dash-mounted TV.

Real-World Usability

Despite the high output, the restomodded Targa remains surprisingly practical. A modern air conditioning system ensures comfort, and the Targa roof can be removed for open-top motoring. As with all 911s, there’s a nod to everyday usability—down to the practical front trunk, even with the addition of the hybrid’s lithium-ion battery.

A Classic Reimagined

Jay and Beau highlight how this restomod is more than just a tribute to BB’s heritage: it’s evidence that leading-edge technology can meaningfully enhance a classic sports car’s abilities without diluting its soul. The car’s instant torque, poise, and head-turning looks show why restomods and custom builds are gaining traction even with traditional brands like Porsche.

For enthusiasts and collectors alike, the 1986 Porsche 911 BB Hybrid delivers all the drama of a classic 911—now with a jolt of instant electric power and modern performance to match its iconic good looks.
